I saw The Simpsons Movie. Funny, but as someone who literally grew up with the show, I was a wee bit disappointed...

I thought The Simpsons Movie was awesome.  I mean... dang, there aren't spoiler tags for me to go on about specific parts, but yeah.  I saw it at the midnight showing around here, and I thought it was well worth it.

The Number 23 wasn't as hideously lame as I was led to believe. Actually, it was pretty good.

I saw half of Pathfinder, too. It...was ok. You could tell they wanted more gore so they added cheap CG blood to every time someone got hit by something. Especially with a morning-star. 300 was better.

Course, there were better movies out this year, like Grindhouse and Transformers, but yeah, 300 was pretty extreme, and makes for good lols otherwise.

You must have seen a different version than I did, because I was bored as hell with annoying repetition and choking use of CGI and I hardly even remember a single thing from the movie really.

Except for Lena Hedley's character, she was the good alright thing there.

And it sucked. Literally every person in the whole movie is retarted except for the doctor and the one soldier guy who helps them.
The part where they firebombed London was cool, though.

The doctor and the soldier guy were the stupidest ones of all sort of. "Oh hey this kids probably an asymptomatic carrier, we should definately get him as far from the quarantine zone as possible so this highly lethal virus can just keep on keeping on"


Everything else you named was wildly illogical yeah, this part though they sort of explained away with him being like the chief contractor sort for the relocation facility, hence he'd have access and could probably have b.s.'d his way past some of the security.

Then again if you've ever seen day of the dead, the military in this movie were all miniature napoleons as far as tactics comparatively.

What pissed me off was how bad the quarantine actually was.
First, they give some schmo unquestioned access to everything.
Second, when someone has been bitten and infected, they don't put her or any part of the compound she is in under armed guard.
The safe house was the WORST safe house I've ever seen. Just cram all the civilians into a dark basement, without telling them why, then turning off the lights. AWESOME IDEA. And why did they turn all the lights off anyway? It's easier to hit something that's lit up.  
And...come on, there's an UNLOCKED BACK DOOR to the safe house. Duh.

I finished watching Chakushin Ari, or "One Missed Call" again. This movie is just as creepy as it ever was, and is by far better than Ringu or the Ring.

The last 2 or so hours of Twin Peaks: Fire walk with me were on some HBO feed last night. Or thats what I saw.

Yeah, as expected that movie basically had two levels to it. "What the hell is going on" and "No, seriously, what the HELL is going on"

That's only part of it, from the angle of Dog Fighting. Its from the same director that did 21 Grams and Babel. Wow, come to think of it, his earlier stuff was better than his later stuff. That's not how this works, Innaritu.

And to make it worse...I actually liked it. Yes. The decade or more of waiting to see the inevitable movie did pay off, for something that had something like 14 or so writers (no seriously, there were a ton of people working on that script) it really wasn't that bad. I've waited for this movie practically since I'm old enough to remember, and wasn't disappointed.

Return of the living dead part 2, which was like the sequel to a pseudo-official sequel to night of the living dead (fun fact: due to a dispute over rights, one of the guys who worked on night was allowed to continue things using the "living dead" part of the title, hence all future romero zombie movies just being "(blank) of the dead") but full of slapstick and running zombies and so on.

My main contention with it is it violated the rule. I think we're all aware of what the rule is.

I liked it, but will fully admit that Christopher Walken is the sole reason it got into theaters.  Of course, if you go in there expecting anything more than coarse humor, and Christopher Walken, you'll be disappointed.

The Kingdom(2007)

Ooh, how was that?

To be entirely clear, I really had no idea just what in the hell to expect when I first heard about this movie. I couldn't tell if it was supposed to by syriana 2 or miami vice with saudis.

What I suppose I mean, is this movie could have gone horribly wrong very easily. It easily could have just degenerated into a string of gunfights loosely connected by platitudes about "the real price of oil", or it could have gone the opposite route and become dour looking people in dimly lit rooms bickering with one another about the same subject.

Instead, the oil aspect is just covered in the opening and provides context. The remainder of the movie is basically a straightforward, well written thriller. The more action centric scenes are logical and don't just suddenly leap out of nowhere while adding nothing.

Acting wise it's pretty much what you'd expect. Jamie Foxx is good, Jennifer Garner should never have made it past that ABC show where she wore various wigs. Jeremy Piven plays the exact same character he's played in everything he's ever been in. The remainder of the cast is good, particularly the Saudi equivalent of and ad hoc "partner" to Jamie Foxx's character.

The trailers though, all they are is "SHADY CRAP INVOLVING A LEGAL FIRM, ALSO A CAR EXPLODING". Which I thought was the plot to the firm, except I forget if a car blew up in that.

I watched the recent animated feature from Lionsgate, Doctor Strange. While it wasn't exactly bad, it wasn't great. If I had to score it, I'd give it a 75%, maybe a little higher. Not excessive suck, but the movie was too slow for a animated movie based off a comic book, and having almost all the summarized action take place in the last ten minutes was not cool.

I heard it was the spiritual sequel to The Mothman Prophecies, which was actually decent. This was terrible though. Terrible.

For some reason while I lay in bed ill and convalescent a few days back I felt the urge to watch movies like mad. I ended up watching Starship Troopers (whereupon I watched the Roughnecks CGI animated series to get the taste out of my mouth), Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn (Janemba!), some Samurai X movie (remind me why they made these movies again?), The Godfather Part 2.

All in all, some decent movies, some good movies, and some downright horrifically mindless action flicks, complete with gratuitous co-ed nudity and epic violence.

Shaun of the Dead.

Transformers was pretty kickass. I agree with the people who made the "too many people not enough robots" complaint. The fight between Prime and Bonecrusher was lame because it lasted a total of 12 seconds. In fact, the Decepticons overall had nowhere near enough screen time, the only ones that really mattered were Starscream and Megatron, who both didn't appear until near the end.

Gremlins.

We weren't taking it seriously, and missed most plot moments, and due to people stepping on the controller multiple times, saw the beginning of the Gremlin bar-scene three times.  But so much hilarious death.  Had to be told the cat-lady on the stair-chair was the same evil woman who hated Charlie.  Considering she was walking just fine during the day, but then at her house was uber-slow and didn't have on her wig.

Very funny, and such.

Also, I watched most of The Santa Clause 2 (missed beginning, but I've already seen I so didn't miss anything), some of The Preachers Wife, some of Eight Below, and "A Christmas Story". Fun times...

At theaters: Sweeney Todd, twice; best musical I've ever watched.

I think the last movie I watched on DVD was Superbad. That, or Paprika.

I Am Legend: Not bad except for the ending surprisingly my wife water broke just a few hours after that movie finished.  The rest as they say is history.

VERY memorable. Probably the most suspenseful and tragic film I've seen, with a villain that ranks up there with Vader. The assassin Sigur is the stuff of your nightmares. Not because he's a cannibal or a scary-looking robot-monster.

There's no music, and most of the killing tools or sinister deception is done with everyday items, otherwise innocuous junk. Also, Tommy Lee Jones' performance is classic.

Well I went to a local International film festival and watched "The Cat Returns" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cat_Returns) also know as "Neko no ongaeshi" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0347618/).

The movie was made by Ghibli studios and directed by a Miyazaki underling. To my surprise it wasn't too "cute" or too "moe", it was a nice balance of everything. It was a treat for the little kids there (lol cats) but also had a story and jokes adults would enjoy. I give this movie a 8.5/10, a very nice Anime movie. ;)

I saw Cloverfield tonight. It's pretty darn good. However, I am apparently one of the unfortunate few who Cannot ____ing Handle prolonged disorienting visual stimuli. I've been on the verge of throwing up since I got out. Four hours ago. I got a headache early on, then got a little dizzy, then my stomach started to hurt a bit, and then I started BURPING and I was like, "oh. oh no." Aaaand then I started to taste bile. But I said to myself, "look, I am NOT going to be that person who throws up in this theater." So I didn't. Still, not fun. Not fun at all.

Still, though... it kind of added to the experience...

there was one thing that bothered me about it, and you'd probably have to live in/near NYC to even notice it:
When they're all on the roof, looking at the omgwtf happened, the view makes it seem like the party was in Brooklyn, it was a nice panoramic shot of lower Manhattan. But when they get outside, they're in the middle of lower Manhattan. That bugged me a little.

It's really well directed, with some crushing irony, and damn, damn it's scary. Like "staying up in bed for an extra hour, talking about the movie because you're both freaked" scary. With this, Shyamalan doesn't even compare to Del Toro.

I haven't seen Pan's Labyrinth, but according to my gf, The Orphanage was even better than that.

Got back from a campus showing of "We Own the Night".

As per tradition, it was an early take or something, so it was too tall, cutting off almost all subtitles for the Russian throughout, and boom mics were prevalent.  Also, it didn't have the opening credits.   Things that JMU's theater does oddly aside, quality movie, sad, emotional, and though the protagonist does some really stupid stuff near the end, still fairly easy to suspend the disbelief.

Shoot 'Em Up was just about the most implausible movie I've ever seen.
But it still kicked ass.

I went to see Young Frankenstein last Saturday!!!  Truly excellent.    Even though I knew all of the punchlines, I still laughed my head off.  Roger Bart (Carmen Ghia in The Producers) was a little weak as Dr. Frankenstein, but Andrea Martin was great as Frau Blucher and Megan Mullally, who played Elizabeth was amazing.

"Young Frankenstein" live? That does sound like it would have been an awesome show to see.

"Alvin and the Chipmunks..." Yeah, go ahead and laugh... It was funny. That's all I'm saying... It had a nice dedication to the late Mr. Bagdasarian, too.

The beginning had dialog reminiscent of Star Wars: Episode II, and the ending had one of the most convoluted and terrible deus ex machinas ever.  However, in between those, there were some decent fight scenes.  Oh, and blind midgets, or something.

Speed Racer. Was like being stabbed in the eyes with candy. Pretty excellently cast, too, and the driving portions were choreographed like matrix fight scenes. Also, the head-wipe thing was pretty cool too (I mean, scene transitions were done with scrolling heads, announcers, etc).

Last night, my wife, and some of my relatives and friends (about 10 of us) saw a sneak preview of "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull", thanks to my "baby sister" and her fiance, who ran across some free passes.

Since this film isn't officially out yet, and I didn't watch any of the this films teasers/trailers before the seeing actual film, I don't want to say anything "spoilerish". So, I'll keep it brief: I liked it. It's a "different" sort of film from the other Indiana Jones films, but still very entertaining. All of the good elements of the other films (well-defined heroes, colleagues, and villians; humor; action; mystery and puzzles; danger and adventure) are in this film. It didn't seem to be lacking in anything, or appear too long, too rushed, or too short. Good movie.

Indiana Jones was straight retarded.

Doomsday was... Well, imagine the kind of lame cyberpunk-lite that children's television companies fell in love with in the 1980s given a film treatment by the kind of director who thinks that exaggerated, not very convincing death and mutilation scenes are a bigger selling point than plot and character development. I want that two hours of my life back.

The first live-action Death Note movie last night; 'twas awesome in a cheesy sorta way.

Except for Ryuk, who was simply awesome.

Well, I've now seen Iron Man, and was just a little disappointed; I can see they were trying to paint Tony Stark as a complex and flawed character, maybe even the world's first high-functioning autistic superhero, but he actually just came across as a self-centred jerk for most of the picture.

I thought that was the point, yeah.

Yeah.

He's also a drunk playboy.

Which is why people love him.

*shrug* Maybe it's just me, then, but he just grated on my nerves almost the whole way through the film. Ah, well, I'm sure the ever-present threat of Col. Fury's boot up his arse will let some of the air out of Stark's ego in time for the Avengers film.

Speed Racer was a long, boring disappointment.

It... I don't even know what I watched, really. I got the same feeling during Spider Man 3, I looked back and forth to the people I was with, and we were all "Are we asleep? Hallucinating? What's going on?"

I mean I know its stupid to complain about plot in an Indiana Jones movie (... from the snobby critic perspective anyway, but certainly not the internal-logic perspective), but there was just no development here, I didn't hate the villain at all (right, I know, nobody hates Darth Vader, but you know he's the bad guy. The only reason this chick was that bad guy was because she was communist, which... yeah, ok, I get that. But she didn't do anything to make me feel like she needed to explode. Those aliens, by the way, were total jerks). There was the lack of a concrete finale, too. Sure we got the race through the jungle, but that's the sequence before the finale, not the finale. They get to the city and nothing of consequence happens (weren't even any booby traps! How can there not be booby traps in an indiana jones movie!) and then Mac is all "in case you didn't watch the Mummy, this is what happens to Benny" and the communists are all "look! Aliens! Lets... wait nothing really happens in this scene!"

Also, no apparent significance to anything that was happening. Sure she was all "we can use this to mind control stuff! Really! No we totally can!" but it was clear that was not what would happen in any capacity. It just... was sort of stupid.

What I'm trying to say here is that the movie was a disappointment to me for entirely the wrong reasons. I had no problem with Ford, who I was afraid would be old and vacant, or Shia Lewhatsits, because he's kind of a punk, and was in a remake of Rear Window. I had no problem with the monkey vines or the nuke or anything else like that. The problem was that the whole crystal skull thing, the way it was worked into the story, hell even what it was was just plain stupid.





Also Speed Racer was an amazing film.

You're telling me Indiana Jones 'straight up retarded', but Speed Racer was an amazing film, and somehow you still hate the Super Mario Brothers movie (which, by the way, is incredibly awesome)?

Crystal Skull was fun/entertaining, but I wouldn't say it's anymore than that, which is exactly how it should be.

Chalk it up to expectations, I guess. I didn't know what to expect for Indy 4, but assumed the mythology part of it would carry the same weight that it had in the others, and ended up feeling like it was just inconsequential to the action of the movie. Of all the things I expected would go wrong, that wasn't one of them, and ended up feeling burned for it. Eh. If you don't agree there's no problem with that.

Same goes for Speed Racer. I had low expectations, and was more than pleasantly surprised. It had bad dialogue, and the action was interrupted frequently by nonsense bits from spridle and chim chim -- which is pretty much exactly what I remember the show as being. Added to some clever film making and wonderfully choreographed everything, and the result was something I really enjoyed. I found it to be a much better experience overall, and those of my buddies that saw both of them agree.

To each his own.

I was looking through some old VHS videos and found Heavy Metal. So my cousin and I watched it. I watched it for the first time in 3rd grade(behind my dad's back of course) and still it makes no sense to me haha.

Awesome movie, honest. It was hilarious. Jack Black was great, as were all the supporting characters, some of whom were a bit surprising when I first heard them. And the fight sequences were quite spectacular, to boot.

Flags was a good film and Spike Lee got butthurt over it. Letters was kinda meh, didn't help the subtitles where white, and often hard to see.

I had been incorrectly informed that there was a scene after the credits.  There was something like that before the credits, but still.

It was full of great fight scenes, and managed to tell a good story, including the origin in the opening credits.

The main feeling it creates is one of complete helplessness. The suspense is painful to endure because the rules of the danger aren't completely defined, even by the end of the movie. There isn't much to bite into.

I was laughing AT the movie several times. It's bad. I'm chuckling a bit now.

I saw "Mongol." Really hardcore and badass, and well-budgeted, but not flashy. A couple hours into the movie, it ended abruptly with "BUT THE REIGN OF GENGHIS KAHN WAS ONLY JUST BEGINNING." First of a trilogy? I had no idea.

It definitely needed smoother transitions, but I enjoyed it.

Paprika ...... This movie is right up there with the End of Eva movie in sheer "WTF?! WHAT?! MY BRAIN! REI--". I found it an interesting movie and as expected from the people who made Paranoia Agent, I was left in a quantum state of both understanding and not understanding.

Lucky for me I saw it on a PPV channel with the original Japanese dialogue (subbed in English). Very interesting movie... but something I won't watch for a long time lest space-time collapse.

I wasn't actually high, just emphasizing that first syllable.

Yeah me too, kinda. The first part delivers in the sense that it makes good on the "what if superman was a hobo, and drunk all the time?" angle.

Then it gets muddled in its own stupid backstory (here it suffers from a bit of what dragged Pirates III down for me; they really ought to have only referred to it obliquely).

Also, and related to the above, an irritating change of pace, tone, writing, about halfway through.

Hoboman is everyone's favorite superhero.

Batman Begins. I have some qualms, but not significant enough to dislike this film. Not action over story, or story over action. I found action and story competing for my attention. Interesting... Reasonably fleshed-out characters for a "first-in-a-series" film...


Well, I did say "good" and not "GOOD", or something along the lines of "Great movie!" or "GREAT MOVIE!" Mildly entertaining, even if I didn't entirely care for the ending. I kind of felt like the younger brother in the thunderstorm scene of the movie "The Boy Who Could Fly". (How's that for an obscure movie reference?)


Still, I must know how "Pirates..." ended, so I'll have to watch III. However, now I'm very glad that I'm watching it on DVD, instead of seeing it in the theater.

Smith's (at least decent)/(at most grand) portrayal of his past characters would be enough to make me see this movie, despite the story flaws.

Saw the new Hulk, and it was a fun movie. Feels like Marvel's really pushing this Avengers thing, though.

Well, they are planning on introducing Thor in Iron Man 2, and having a Captain America movie (possibly trilogy), and even an Ant-Man movie, and then an Avengers movie.

Yeah, I heard about Captain America. And Iron Man 2 will likely be awesome, but who the hell is Ant-Man?

Hank Pym is the greatest superhero to have ever lived in the fictional Marvel universe.






Also Thor was all up in Hulk, am I the only one that thinks so/noticed? The whole "mysterious thunderstorms etc" news report, hulk yelling at the sky, all that.

Hank Pym found a way to shrink himself, using a new type of particle he named "Pym Particles".  He also made a helmet that let him command ants.

He soon lost his fiance, and then ran into the daughter of a wealthy industrialist or something who looked just like his late fiance, and gave her super powers so they could both save her father.

They got married, Pym found a way to make things grow too, another guy took the Giant Man mantle for a while, Pym goes crazy and thinks he killed himself and changes his name, making a costume that has shoulder-disk things that let him fly.

This isn't even half of his story, and I'm already know it's too much.  He got shafted a lot, but was best in his "Hank Pym: SCIENCE Adventurer" days.  He shrunk nail-guns and other things into his coat pockets, and then would enlarge them to shoot people.  He also would shrink the particles in a wall, causing a hole to open.

He also banged Tigra.

Hellboy II was rad, I enjoyed it immensely -- better than the first in my opinion -- acting was better, script was better, there's this bazaar scene that felt like a Star Wars cantina scene, except with Guillermo del Toro monsters in it, which was seriously cool.

Though, if you like the first for the nazis and rasputin, etc, or the space gods (... ok, if you saw the first because you liked the comic books) then this might not be the movie for you.

I gotta wonder though, near the end when princess-chick was all "he's so-and-so son of the fallen one" or something, shouldn't it be more like "son of the horrible 7 space gods stuck in a crystal mired in the crushing infinite blackness of the etc etc etc etc" key difference being ogrdu-jahad and not, like, the devil or whatever she was referring to.

I really want to see Hellboy 2, if only because I think direction similar to Pan's Labyrinth will make it 1000X better than the first Hellboy movie (I have great admiration and respect for the SFX and direction in/of Pan's Labyrinth).

I finally watched everything there was to watch on the special edition set for "Batman: Gotham Knight", and I say that it is Epic Win. The "eastern" style worked exceedingly well Batman and didn't distract from the story/action, and the 6 shorts were incredible in their detail and approach. (Also Kevin Conroy as Batman = W00T). It wasn't all "Look at us! We're Anime!", in fact there were only 2 shorts where the Anime influence was strong enough for me to say "Now that's Anime", but at the same time it was in a very detailed and realistic style (like that of Steamboy or Death Note) and not like the stereotypical dime-a-dozen animes.
My favorite short had to be Dead Shot in the Gotham Knight mini-movie, although kudos go out to Field Test as being runner-up with its near perfect "Batman Begins"/"Dark Knight" canonicity.

Highly recommended for anyone who likes Batman, or The Big O (lulz batman as a robut).

Guillermo del Toro directed both Hellboy films.



Also Gotham Knight was pretty rad. Dead Shot was my fav too (cool how they all fit together kind of part way ish).

Gratuitous scenes in Hellboy: (SPOILERS)

Fight with the elemental. Instead of sending butterfingers Abe to catch the jumping bean with his hands, Hellboy should've shot the seed with his enormous gun before it reached water. Even though he didn't do that, however, Hellboy also could've shot the Elemental in its "energy cortex" as it was rising up, again finishing the fight before it started. Carrying the baby the whole time was also stupid. Just hand it off to somebody before you start the acrobatics. btw, the sequence with the Elemental knocking over cars as it lumbered down the street towards the camera -- War of the Worlds.

Men in Black knockoff. The Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD or BURPED for short) was stuttering on about the anti-acid pills he buys, including where he buys them and whether or not they're over-the-counter, not because this is important or interesting, but because there's a generic tentacle-monster flailing in the background. Flash several other creatures in an off-hand, obligatory manner.

Fight with the tooth-fairies. You know the from moment that Jill walks into the ransacked auction hall, she's the one with the skills to eliminate the swarm with her area of effect pyrokinesis. But instead of having her blast away, everyone starts shooting individual fairies with their pistols, and we have to watch the human agents get gnawed to pieces before Jill finally starts chanting "There is a flame inside me, THERE IS A FLAME INSIDE ME," like a cheesy inspirational film, and finally kills the buggers.

(inconsistency: they're called "tooth fairies" because they love calcium and eat your teeth first, but the agents' meatless skeletons still had their teeth intact.)

The entire movie. If the crown melts in fire, why didn't the elven king destroy the crown instead of breaking it in three? Even if the King wanted it as an insurance policy against the humans, he must've realized that it was going to fall into the wrong hands as his guards died in front of him. Even then, he could've done something to destroy it.

Abe and Johann = gay lovers. The princess had to die so that Abe and Johann can get together in Hellboy III.

Krauss was fun to watch, and has a cool design. Same goes for the Golden Army and the Elven swordsmen (Pyramid Head, woot).

Look, it isn't my job to defend movies that other people made, but... lemme just offer some counter points here.

Hellboy is a terrible shot, he says as much in the first movie. Also, if he had to be told to hit it in the... whatever Johann calls it (something ganglia) then he wouldn't shoot there first. Also, he was carrying a baby, and running away from it. Why was he carrying a baby? Same reason he blasted himself out of the window -- he wants to be liked and accepted and to be a hero.

Besides, movie logic -- they wanted a big monster to fight. At least you didn't ask about why the prince was in that scene, talking to HB on the top of the hotel sign, which I thought was pretty obvious but is a common question I've seen elsewhere.

I think everyone in my theater thought the same thing about the hallway scene, but I also didn't care, so... whatever.

Jill would've killed the redshirts, and Abe, if she'd flame on'd right off. Besides, killing BPRD redshirts is a kind of a running joke, I've heard. In the one BPRD graphic novel I've read, they were just cannon fodder.

Last one I've seen answered by someone else, and went something like "do you take the bullets away from a police officer just because a criminal might get it?" Dude was clearly convinced his people could kill his son, otherwise he wouldn't have sent them all to their death.

The real inconsistency there is why didn't the princess challenge her brother? I mean, what is he going to do, kill her? The only answers I can come up with are -- she was somehow ineligible for the throne (... kings only? I dunno, seems sort of randomly sexist) which I don't buy, and the other being that She wouldn't have done it except as a last resort, which is pretty much what happened (kind of... in a movie logic kind of way) which I think is a more reasonable answer.

I don't remember anything about the first movie, except for Kroenen. If Hellboy'd said that he was a terrible shot once the jumping bean was released, that would've been good. But he didn't!


That, I can see.

That didn't bother me, but my gf was annoyed that Hellboy didn't try shooting the prince just then. I don't remember seeing Hellboy run out of ammo.


Which is why she should've said right off, "Get out, I'm going to fry them all."


That'd be fine, but they took too long to die. Too long like the hallway scene.

The Simpsons Movie:
Very entertaining even to this day... If you see the special features, they mention that everything was "drawn" directly (not scanned) into an animation system by animators, allowing them to finish the movie faster. Interesting, but I guess we can't buy any animation cells, huh?  ???

Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End:
Mike: I see what you meant about this third Pirates film. Instead of feeding us the backstory a little each movie, they try to shove all of it and this film's story into our heads at once. Concentrate on one and lose the other... Not too much fun trying to keep up with everything... Still mildly entertaining, though, and I did like some aspects of the ending.

Get Smart

I quite enjoyed it.

Omigosh, me too!! That part we're he mooned the world was hilarious, as was his man love  scene. :o The kids in the theater screamed! HAHAHAHA ;D

Heath Ledger scared me shitless, the movie was superb

Dark Knight.

Was sad about how certain parts near the end went down, but incredibly awesome movie.

WALL-E at 5:20. It was fun, but not as ZOMG MINDBLOWING as people kept tell me.

The Dark Knight at 12:01. The mind-blowing that WALL-E failed to accomplish happened here instead. The only thing that ticked me off was how Joker uses face-paint instead of having his skin bleached, but that little nitpick aside, there was quite literally nothing I can complain about.

I thought that made him more interesting, more freakish. More real. This joker didn't need some freak accident to get the way he was.


It was perhaps a little too long.

I want The Dark Knight to take Best Picture 2008.

Um, either way, he's a sociopathic clown. It's better, personally, to go full out with characters like that. There's a concept called Too Much Of A Good Thing, and I think Joker's appearance embodied too much realism in this film.

Here's the question to be asked: which is scarier? A killer with chemically deformed, bone-white skin, or a killer with haphazardly applied, blotchy face paint?

I've gotta say, there's something creepy about a guy who applies make up everyday to hide his scarring.

There were a couple parts that surprised me, but it was fuck win.

Looks like I can finally die in peace, thank you Batman.

Now all I have to do is mentally photoshop Schwarzwald over the Joker and add some domes and my life's dream is fullfilled.


...I haven't seen Dark Knight yet, which is pissing me off. I really have to see it within the next week.

I think the latter's scarier, because the former is something you'd expect from a cartoon villain, and it just makes me smirk and say "oh of course. He fell into a vat of dreaded CHEMICAL-X!"

Saw it a second time, and I enjoyed it even more. Probably because I wasn't watching from the front row.

Semi-Pro - DVD: Some people like it, and some people are "meh". I liked it.

...and on Friday, a little movie called "Batman: The Dark Knight"... It was good...

Oh my gosh! Did I just commit heresy?!? Um no. It's just that with all the films that are billed as "worth the hype". I actually thought this film deserved better than the usual overblown movie hype. Not that it doesn't have it's spectacular moments. It's just that at the end, your going to walk out thinking "wow, that was really good..." Therein lies the splendid craftsmanship of the filming staff/production staff/cast (not listed in order of importance, but all of them on the same level). Some flaws yes, but a very good film.

By the way, did anybody here ever rent DVD's from a Red Box machine? They're pretty cool. I rented the two DVD's above from one, after seeing The Batman:

The good: $1 rental. No membership fee. You can return movies at any Red Box, not just the one from which you rented the DVD's. No late fee (each extra night is just another $1).

The bad: Since it's like a regular rental, you pay sales tax (minor issue). You must use a credit card (very minor issue). To get your receipt, you must type in your e-mail address (minor issue, because you can skip this step, too).

Bonuses: All rentals must be overnight, so if you do like I did, and rented at about 1 or 2 AM in the morning, you don't have to return it until 9PM the next day. When you do return it, if you gave it your e-mail, it will send you "movie was returned" e-mails with date and time, so there's no question you took them back.

Of course, I'm not going to ditch my video store card (Red Boxes have limited selection), but this could give NetFlix some competition...

I don't believe I've ever heard of Red Box before, let alone seen one.

Red Boxes suck, the videos are always scratched up to shit, the selection is practically nil, and a 24 hour rental for a buck seems well and dandy at first, until you realize you hadn't watched the movie yet because you rented it at 1230 in the morning.

Saw the Dark Knight the other day and it was totally amazing.

Heath Ledger was awesome but I found Christian Bale's performance a little irrtating since he sounds like a Carl McCoy impersonator when he speaks as Batman.

Just watched Leon a few minutes ago which was also amazing but quite sad.

Gary Oldman did an excellent job of being an unlikeable, evil bastard.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

A fun movie, but the CGI was a bit iffy.

I just watched a Korean film with the English title of "The President's Last Bang".

It's a fictionalized account of what happened in 1979 when South Korean president Park Chung Hee was assasinated. It had a really good soundtrack, the vocal bits were top notch (Enka! Yay! Jaurim! Yay!), and had a moody sort of noir set of theme musics.

Strange Invaders

Goofy alien movie from the 70'/80's fun stuff.

Heath Ledger is my 2nd favorite Joker officially. 1st Favorite in the live-action ones, but 2nd overall... that honor goes to Mark Hamill's Joker in "Batman: the Animated Series".

I absolutely loved the story line with its intensely complex plot line and really dark humor. (Disappearing Pencil trick, NEED I SAY MOAR)

Despite being extremely late, Dark Knight was exactly everthing it was cracked up to be, except christian bale should look into voice digiuse implants. he sounded like Wolverine should. and he had his mouth shaped as if he had water in there that he didn't want to swallow before talking...

I watched it again because the people I was hanging out with wanted to see it, and it was damn funny enough to warrant watching it again.

And children's tickets only cost $7.50, and the ticket-takers aren't going to care, because they aren't going to be rewarded for calling someone out on it.

Only $7.50? That's the price of a student ticket around here, but it still sounds expensive.

And Pineapple Express and Step Brothers would be easily worth a second viewing.

Last movie I watched was Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which was pretty lame overall. Just before that, I saw either Mirrors or Journey to the Center of the Earth; can't remember which. Journey was alright, but I must say I enjoyed Mirrors more than I expected I would.

I watched Blood Sport earlier, gotta love the old school cheese fests and for add lulz, I was reading the No Mutants Allowed forums and the constant fanboy comments.

WHY COULD NONE HAVE YOU WARNED ME NOT TO WATCH WANTED WITH MY AUNT!!!?? Goodness, apart from the sex scenes and graphic violence, i enjoyed it immensely.
I feel really bad for my aunt, though. She's older than my mom, and definitely not someone who likes violence. she prefers chick flicks....

Is it weird that i found the sex more disturbing than the head explosions and the swearing? (wich, thank god the swearing wasn't translated right in the subtitles! Yay Catholic mexicans!)

Didn't really watch most of the first two, as there was much chatting amongst the seven to eleven people there at various points, though almost everyone left by the time we started Goldmember, so I actually watched most of that.

Not the best of decisions.

Air Force One.
This is such an awesome movie and Harrison Ford should run for president.

Babylon A.D. was a bit disappointing; Children of Men did basically the same thing, and better. Death Race was quite entertaining, though.

Worst movie I've seen in a LONG time. Therefore I loved it. Definitely worth it if you go with a bunch of friends who enjoy blasting things as they watch it. I myself was proud to announce, "WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT" nice and loud at the ending.

Really now. Movie didn't even explain the plot until the last fifteen minutes. And the ending? Ridiculous.

So many pointless scenes, characters and unresolved threads. But again, that's why I found it to be so wonderful.

Dammit, it did suck, didn't it?

Guess I just didn't want to admit that to myself. :(

M.D Geist on Sci-fi.

Good lord, no wonder anime got a bum rap as "super violent" back in the early to mid 90's, however, I got a kick outta the over the top violence and despite the dub being the usual U.S Manga corps suckfest, I though Jason Beck was awesome as Geist, it's a shame he died in 03.

Thoroughly enjoyable. Especially the massive robots with the glass cockpit canopies, thin enough for a man to punch through. Bonus points for the grenade dangling from the hilt of the combat knife--because you have to blow up the poor bastard after you stab his brain.

I missed the last nine minutes but I can't imagine it was the ending. Surely they must be playing the rest next Monday. I'll be watching.

Second half comes on October 6th. I'll be watching as well. Despite being the usual ultra violent sleaze OVA of the 90's, it did have some potential. Plus I liked the design of Geist's armor.

My sister doesn't let me watch the sci-fi channel...... it's too weird for her, the n00b...

Somebody here is wrapped up in the romance of old Hollywood.

I saw Quarantine and like everyone else, I was surprised at how good it was. It's best to watch it with a rowdy audience, especially a ghetto audience if you can.

Ringu - More fun than creepy, but it had its moments for sure. Sadako is a BITCH. It made a lot more sense than the American remake, as you'd expect.

Dawn of the Dead - Kicked ass, I wish there was more.

I watched "A Girl Like Me: the Gwen Araujo Story". It's about a transexual that gets murdered. Sad. It was part of hispanic history month, for some reason... as if hispanic=transexual. I mean the family was... most of the movies they show are only in there cuz the actors are hispanic, not because only hispanic teens get pregnant at 16, or lose their jobs, or get murdered for feeling out of place in their bodies... I think it'd bother me less if they weren't making an effort to make it "hispanic"...

AKA .REC. I saw the original Spanish version, I wasn't impressed. Sounds like the American remake is better though.

Saw (the first one) was pretty awesome. I've heard the other ones suck, though.

There Will Be Blood was also a damn good movie. The end was epically dark-humorous.

It Waits was the last movie I watched before I hit the hay.

I loved the excessive use of Rag Doll deaths, cheap awful plastic body parts and Sci Fi Original level CGI.

"Straight Jacket," the ani-Monday movie. This is what Fullmetal Alchemist shoulda been like!

Fun stuff, if a tad bland. Seems like a videogame in the making. Also, there was a silly moment in the beginning when Steve Blum effectively spoke to himself through two different people. I counted three Blums in ten minutes. "When push comes to shove, the price suddenly becomes negotiable." lol.

And then there was Shion from Xenosaga! ahaha.

I'm watching this as well. I'm really digging it. Love the Power Armor designs as well and Brigit Hoffman? I was sold then and there. I'm also getting a Fullmetal vibe from it, except it's about 10x more awesome.

The Ferry Man on sci-fi.

While not horrid CGI, the make up effect for the Ferry Man where actually pretty decent, but the usual craptastic gore effect where a riot though.

Sometimes they end in Monster. Like Swamp Monster and Rock Monster.
Sometimes they just take a word and put it next to Alien. Examples include:  Alien Invasion, Alien Express (aliens invade a train), and Alien Incursion (Whatever that is)
Sometimes they like to use a single word explaining the animal. Such as Kaw (For killer crows), Locust, Mosquito, or The Hive (Which was about Ants... not bees *Slaps forehead*)
Sometimes they'll be named after the animal in question: Pterodactyl, Sabertooth, Rottweiler.

And many times they'll just have such silly names that it amazes me they had the balls to display their names in the credits. Aztec Rex (T-rex vs Cortez vs Aztecs), Killer Bird Flu (About giant birds that eat people... and also have bird flu for some reason), Boa vs Python (It's about what you think it's about), SS Doomtrooper (Nazi super soldier), Frankenfish (Again... it's about what you think it's about), and the list goes on.


If you're really into bad movies (beyond SciFi too) I have a list I wrote up giving out awards for subpar performances in various areas such as: Most stereotypical characters, Most shallow plot, Stiffest action scenes, worst CGI, most unnecessary explosion, and so on. We call them the Crummies.

Just got done watching Freddy V.S Jason on Sci-Fi.

I love this movie, not because of the horror icon's but because Ronny Yu turned everything into your run of the mill Asian wire fu fest, that combinded with the 3rd grade dialog(seriously, Freddie's line where "Take this bitch" or some other variant), and you have an amazingly Sci-Fi channel level movie. The Nu Metal soundtrack was also made of fail.

I watched an hour-and-a-half long drama special that was basically a movie. Sensei wa Erai!! was totally not what I expected. They've got some really smart people in Japan, and those little boys made me cry! Poor 17-year-old had to pretend to be 13... LAWL

I didn't just watch this but I've been thinking about it: Did anyone else see Prince Caspian, and did you enjoy it? I thought it was pretty fantastic, same as above; it seemed overshadowed by other movies but I thought it was worth the money I payed for it.

Gotta disagree there. Terrible editing, very jumpy plot. Dialogue was fast and low, impossible to follow when the plot was progressing. And the cycle of place-chase-place-chase was showing through. What was with all the improbably near-death escapes, too?

Casino Royale and You Only Live Twice still stand at the top of the pile.

Ya know, I have never even heard of the book this movie is based off of, yet it's a "Pop culture Hit". I've seen the commercials, and it looks pretty damn boring with tons of wire-fu and 18 year old vampire angst, oh yeah and bad acting.

Twilight of the Dark Master

I love this OVA. It's your typical sleazy ultra violent OVA of the early 90's but it's a lot of fun.

I saw Twilight. Neon, did you read the books? I ask because as a fan I was satisfied, most fans were, so far. as a movie it was terrible I agree. you have to already know what's going on to get it. =/
And the only reason Graham hasn't heard of it is because he's a boy. Every one I know heard about it by mouth. I've never seen advertisemnets for the books. maybe one.

Kristen Stewart should be banned from ever having a lead role again. I mean, she sounded dead!!! the only time she didn't was when she woke up in the hospital. I mean, the dialogue is what makes the relationship between Bella and Edward so great, and those two killed it.

And jasper did look like he was in pain. That was hilarious.

It's not exactly a movie per se, but I just finished up watching The Legend of Zelda.

As in, the "EXCUUUUUUUUUUUUSSSE ME, PRINCESS" cartoon that aired on the Super Mario Bros. Super Show.

I read the first book but I kept falling asleep so I gave up on reading it. I'm also kinda mad because SMeyer copied Charlaine Harris' "Dead Until Dark" series/True Blood. She pulled it off way better than SMeyer did.

Aaand, this morning I watched My Fair Lady! I've read the book, and the original play, Pygmalion. I enjoyed both, and the movie was good too.

Super Gator.

It featured busty bikini models running through forests while being chased by a poor CGI dino-croc. I've never seen such unashamed use of the monster during the daytime. They didn't try to hide it at all. It's like they took all the shots beforehand and totally overestimated the CGI they would put into it later.

Yeti (Sci-Fi Original)

This movie is a lulz-a-thon. This movie didn't even use CGI, oh no. They opted for a huge guy in a costume, plus I fell over laughing when they Yeti ripped one of the students legs off (a poorly made fake leg I might add) and started beating him with it. Gotta keep an eye out for Cyclops this saturday.

Cyclops (Sci-Fi Original)

You can tell it's a Sci-Fi Original with the hammy acting, 3rd grade writing, and Z grade CGi. I loved how the Cyclops was almost unstoppable, but was killed by a single spear to the eye, and a 4 foot fall. The movie was also filled with weird deaths, i.e cutting a guys throat (with grape juice blood no less) with a key, slashing a guy in the chest and then his neck starts bleeding, and decapitating some one simply by swing close to the them. Good ol' Sci-Fi.

The remake of "The Day the Earth Stood Still" on Sunday in IMAX.  I thought it was alright, but preachy and the ending sucked, whereas everyone I saw it with hated it.

Last night, I saw Cadillac Records, which was awesome.  Definitely felt for the characters, but I kind of thought they tried to throw in more than they needed too, with some characters just kind of showing up for five scenes or so.

Not as much humor as I've come to expect from computer animated movies starring talking animals, but I guess times change.  Ended up being longer than I thought it was, and was very late getting my dad from the auto shop, but that's not really relevant.

Though the ending wasn't too much of a surprise, I liked how the plot was executed. I quite enjoyed it.

Ron Pearlman is the only redeeming factor this absurd and pointless movie has.

Evangelion 1.0 You are (not) alone.

It's been years since I watched evangelion. I certainly liked how the Ramiel battle was more dramatic compared to the series, and that there was some closure over Shinji's unwillingness and fear of piloting the eva.

I got the two Stargate SG1 movies for christmas ;D And finally got to watch the ending of the Season 10 arc (Ark of Truth), and the final SG1 movie (Continuum). Both totally freaking amazing.


And tho I can't really call it a movie, it is a TV special... just saw Doctor Who "The Next Doctor". Really really good. 8)

Flu Bird Horror

Nothing says low budget like puppets, crappy CGI, and guys in monster bird costumes, sometimes in the same scene.

I've seen Flu Bird Horror. I like how the writers weren't sure if they wanted the "bad boy" character to have character development or not. He's really inconsistent with being good and being evil.

Cyclops (Sci Fi Original)

Just had to ring in the new year with a Z Grade movie and boy does Cyclops meet the requirements. Key throat slashing FTW.

So, I watched The Prestige and was pretty much wowed by it. I saw Dracula the same night, and why did Lucy have to loose her top EVERY SINGLE TIME!!!!???
And I pretty much just finished binging on a certain drama. Oh, I watched G@me. japanese movie. really good. check it out. and then there was a mexican indie flick. Hey, my valley is currently flooded with famous people thanks to a certain film festival. dammit i wanna go really bad...

Aztec Rex (Sci-Fi Original)

Little know fact, Cortez fought A T-Rex when he went to Mexico. Thankful, the Spaniards where played by white dudes.

I like how entire the Aztec Empire is represented by about 7 Hawiians (The credits identify them as a Hawiian acting troop) wearing tattoos of German flags.

I also like how sneaky the dinosaur is. How can you not notice a 20 ton monster until it's right next to you? He sneaks up on so many people in this movie. As I can recall, he eats a guy's legs while the man is sleeping. That's stealth.

I also like how big Cortez's wig is.


It's one of my favorite movies ever actually.

There were two or three parts I liked because I had read Hellblazer, but also more parts that I was irked by their staying from the source material.

I'd rate it higher as an action flick than I would as a comic movie.

I watched The Unborn because I wanted to watch a horror flick with my woman and I thought, hey, co-writer of Dark Knight, it's gotta be half-decent, right? Wrong. Completely, utterly wrong. Shoulda seen Frost-Nixon or Slumdog Millionaire instead.

It's perplexing that a writer attached to such a gripping production as Dark Knight could also be responsible for such a pile of crap as The Unborn.

I finally watched Iwo Jima. I thought it was really good. My friend was the one who caught it, but the main character's name, Saigo, is a pun. Saigo means last. While there were some tell-tale signs that it was made by americans, I thought it captured the spirit of the japanese idea of honor.
What irked the fan in me was that it was filmed in CALIFORNIA. The landscape is very familiar to me. The reason it irks me is because if I had been a fan of Ninomiya-san 5 years ago, i could have been all over barstow and berkley when i heard they were filming. m(_,_)m

Iron Man, Strange Wilderness, and Paul Blart: Mall Cop... Of the two Happy Madison films, Paul Blart was better. Of course Iron Man was awesome. OK, the DB trailer looks cool. Anyone see the trailers for Star Trek? Good stuff...Seriously, it's good...

Taken is pretty much an hour and a half of Liam Neeson injuring very bad people.

Planet Raptor (Sci-fi Original)

Wow, this one was a stinker. A combo of half way decent looking puppets, and 1980' grade CGI, and it took place on a mid evil style plant for no reason.

Star Trek: Insurrection (from my movie collection) - OK, nothing groundbreaking here. It was basically a movie length Star Trek Classic Series episode with The Next Generation crew instead of Kirk and crew. I will neither bash it into the earth, nor raise it on a pedestal. I liked it, though.

Marley & Me - Mrs. Negotiator and I took in an afternoon movie. OK, liked it. It's not a "reimagined Old Yeller" story either...

What? They've got Quantum of Solace at the $1 theater, but that theater's heat is broken. No problem, I'll still go see it...

Appleseed

Fun. First time I caught the entire movie. Hitomi needed more character development, though.

There was a gaffe when an actor said "multiple-cannon" instead of "multipede-cannon." :(

As for myself, I watched The Who's Tommy before work, and I haven't decided if I'm in the mood for Speed Racer, Die Hard, or Die Hard 2 to watch when I get off of here.

Fearless.

I loved that massive fight between Huo Yuanjia and Master Chin in that restaurant.

You know what, though? Splinter looks like it might be half-way decent.


Fearless was good, but Hero was better.  :P

Also, Fearless sometimes felt like propaganda. I don't mean the hero's triumphs over the cheating Westerners. I'm talking about the one part in the movie where he finds complete and utter fulfillment from a simple life in the fields. It's probably just an innocent part of the story to develop his character, but since the movie is Chinese, it reminds me of something a totalitarian would say. Be simple, have no thoughts or worries but work; you will find contentment! That kind of thing.

You know R.Dan, I got that feeling as well. From the previews, it looks to be of much higher quality (I use that word lightly though) than your normal Sci-fi original. I certainly hoping the monsters are guy in at least half-way decent looking make up, and not Sci-Fi usual jerky, grainy CGI, but it it's not; it won't surprise me.

Splinter (Sci-fi original)

Twas ok. Gore was pretty cheesy, like the part where the sheriff got ripped it half and the "totally realistic latex". Movie also seems like a bit of a rip off of the thing i.e it uses body parts from it's victims. Overall it was light years ahead of the normal crappy Sci-Fi original.

Splinter was actually pretty good. It just goes to show you that the SciFi Channel actually does give these guys a big enough budget to make good films. Most directors just blow it on CGI instead of, say, night cameras, decent actors, and a writer.

Yeah, I was actually surprised it turned out half way decent and it was nice to see a Sci-Fi movie not use excessive CGI, however, I'm totally looking forward to Alien v.s Hunter.

Coraline

Most completely fun adventure. It follows somewhat of a formula, but it's just so delightful and cute, and moves along quickly enough.

The movie is targeted a bit more towards girls, but anyone can enjoy it. In fact, every age and demographic was in the theatre when I saw it.

X (Movie version on Sci-fi)

Meh, decent movie, with Manga UK's usual monotone dub and sub-par acting.

Gran Torino was a really, really good movie. Eastwood should get all the Oscars this year just for being a bad ass.

I've watched a few novices since Saturday, however the stand out was.... Alien v.s Hunter, a Sci-fi original billed as "action packed" but mostly consisted of the cast running around in a sewer from the spider alien. Wasn't a whole lot of CGI, and the gore was limited to repeating the same shots over and over again.

After splinter I was expecting another movie that at least tried. Splinter made that 1-2 million budget work, and pull off a decent movie. However I'm pretty sure that was a one time deal. Hydra was also lulzy. 

I missed most of Alien vs Hunter because of Street Fighter, but I saw parts of it and it looked like it was trying to be a B-movie, which I don't like. The funniest part about those movies is watching the director fail at making a competent film, but if he's specifically instructing the actors to deliver their lines like morons, he's defeating the purpose.

Also, just before we forget Splinter forever, I just wanted to point out that a man got his arm cut off and was still in good enough shape to repeatedly fire a pump action shotgun with his remaining arm while standing up about 20 minutes later.

lol no kidding. The movie jumped around a lot, and honestly, I think they where trying to hard to make it bad. I don't know, maybe my t.v picture setting was messed up but I swear the movie had a yellow tint in the beginning and blue towards the end.

Chun Li was well-designed. Whenever I read her character description and it mentions her as an undercover investigator, I have to wonder... how? Who would go into an investigation wearing enormous spiked bracelets and a flashy, revealing qipao? Yeah. The Chun Li in the first half hour of the movie, that I could get behind.

Fail movie is mail. Seriously, Vega is never going to be portrayed properly. In the first one, he was friggin' Native America, and in this one he is a *Mestizo (played by Taboo from the Black Eyed Peas) or, hell maybe he is suppose to be Asian in this one. Vega is a Spaniard (Caucasian), maybe one day he will be a proper actor casting.

I watched a 5-hour playthrough of MGS, over the past couple days. I've only ever gotten halfway through the game, many years ago. Very frustrating game!

A very pleasing story. Impressive engine, too, considering the year it was made.

And yep, MGS counts as a movie in my book.

Only detail I remember being giddy about is the inclusion of the homosexual couple in the Dan and Laurie dinner scene that are possibly Captain Metropolis and Hooded Justice.

Couldn't be them. Metropolis died in a car accident a couple years beforehand.

Eh, overall I think it failed to reproduce a couple dramatic moments from the book. Like the "you quit" line in the beginning--the guitar plucks immediately afterwards were soap-opera melodrama cheese. Then, the changes and additions made to the ending scenes kind of flubbed the impact there.

Instead they blasted ten seconds of music at the beginning of every new scene in an attempt to speed-cook the drama.

Yeah. Not bad, but meh.

There is a lot of theory about Captain Metropolis not being that body, since it had been decapitated and therefore unidentifiable.  It stems from the likely relationship between Captain Metropolis and Hooded Justice, and hinges that the body presumed to be Muller's not being Hooded Justice, either through them being different people or the body simply not being Muller.  The Captain's old flame convincing him to stage his death so they can live happily ever after.  Their bow-ties looking like domino masks supports the theory, with a weaker bit of evidence being how Moore doesn't leave things unfinished or unturned.  An example of such being that the script for the first panel of Last Laugh was a page long, single-spaced.


Most of the music was stuff Moore quoted at the end of that particular chapter, so it made me nerd-joy a bit.

I just watched through the "Lupin the 3rd VS Detective Conan" television special (it counts as a movie >.>... )

If you like single shots, I just remembered this movie called Russian Ark, which is one enormous single shot. It glides all around, from location to location.

I really like AMC... they were showing a movie from the 50's last night, and i was like D= because there was a hispanic acting in it, as well as a black guy, and the hispanic had one of the three leads =X i was amazed... It was an interesting movie too, about boxing, which i don't get why people like because it's hard to watch... and the hispanic shattered his hand near the end.... but he gained the love of his life, ironically... the funniest part was when a white guy was singing a song in spanish and my mom just happens to walk in and starts singing along xD it was a song about CALZONES xD cracked us up...

Apocalypto

Certainly a bizarre movie, but fairly entertaining. Gotta give Gibson props for getting white guys to play the Spaniards, and Indios and Mestizo's as the the Mayans.

X Men Origins: Wolverine

Even bigger surprise was on a date. Oh snap!

Saw "Star Trek" in IMAX. Frakking amazing; really glad they did what they did, too.

Star Trek was pretty good, but I always liked the old series because it was about exploring, not action and drama. I know that if the movie were like that people would get bored, but I hope it doesn't become a trend to make Star Trek like that 100% of the time. If they ever make a TV show based off it, I hope they explore brave new worlds and go where no man has gone before, as opposed to being a Battlestar Galactica clone or something.

Well, with the exception of Encounter at Farpoint all the series pilots were more focused on an action plot than exploring. Now that the new alt timeline is established, there should be a lot more room for exploration of the universe in the next movie.
And hopefully Klingons as well.

Just saw Star Trek in Imax.

It was goddamned awesome. It had the same "holy crap this is the coolest thing ever" factor I got from the first time I saw A New Hope.

It was THAT good.

When Kirk got promoted to Captain, I started clapping along with the tribunal in the movie... and it took me a couple seconds to realize it.

This movie was a degree of magnitude better than I expected.

I really want to watch Star Trek. I like the show, but haven't been able to get into it, though I know I don't need the reference.

It seems like there are gonna be A LOT of really good movies this summer. yay! I'm excited. Year One looks hilarious, I'm making it a point to watch that, and Up, and maybe Terminator... staying away from X-Men, I've seen the graphic xD

I really liked how they used time travel in the Star Trek movie.

I mean, if you have to do something cheesy and sacrifice a little bit of continuity to tell a good story, sometimes it pays off to go ahead and do it. Sure time travel is a bit cliche, but it was well worth putting up with in this case.

They did something very "Star Trek" to let them do a few things that were a bit "un-Star Trek" while still being "Star Trek". 

I was actually thinking more about Star Trek, and yeah there are a bunch of plot holes. But who cares, it was just a bad ass movie.

It had just the amount of cheesy. And the right amount of talky. All it needed was more starship porn. Just like Transformers needed more robot ass kickings, but it looks like #2 will deliver on that.

Totally agree that Star Trek had enough action to let you forget all about plot holes and continued to suspend your disbelief.

Terminator was alright.  Awesome throwback lines and such, but the action scenes weren't as awesome as Star Trek, which I had to compare it to, having seen Star Trek in IMAX just the night before.

I was satisfied with the third Terminator movie, "Salvation". If they tried to be corny, rather than take the franchise seriously, I'd have to deny any and all claims to the existence of such a film.

Very well executed, now to see how they go with the inevitable sequel to a sequel to a sequel.

Up was amazing.

Star Trek was indeed amazing. I saw it opening weekend. The red shirt after they get on the Enterprise that says the line "I'm ready to kick some ass!"...I stood up in the theater, pointed at the screen and yelled "RED SHIRT!"

They made this movie in the only way they really could, by having an alternate universe that is linked to the actual universe we all know by a small thread that is very bright orange and hard to miss...and says "Leonard Nemoy" in bright blue on it.

And gotta love the classic McCoy "Dammit Jim I'm a doctor not a..." line.

I finally saw Wall-E last night. It was rather enjoyable on a "sit with your little cousins or your significant other and watch a cute movie" level.

But yeah, I would totally go see Star Trek in theaters again.

Um...I might be miscounting, but unless you deny the existence of T3, Salvation is the fourth.

Saw three this past week, which made for quite the interesting whirl of emotions.

First was Shindler's List, then The Incredible Hulk, and finally Wall-E. All were spectacular films.

See, now everyone knows why I didn't want to "discuss" Star Trek... and for those that didn't like it, remember it's also a very open reboot (even considering it's already anything-can-happen sci-fi)...

I missed the usual "group outing" to see Terminator Salvation (midnight showing ending at 2:00 + and me and Mrs. N. having to catch a 6:30 AM flight = the sleep math just didn't work out). So, I watched T3 on DVD this last Tuesday (didn't see it yet), and saw Salvation last night.

T3 was decent sci-fi action, and an adequate bridge to Judgement Day. No big character development for John, but a little more insight into how Terminators (especially t-8xx) think, and how much they are ruled by their programming.

Salvation was a little bit of Asimov-esque robot philosophy slammed down into the trenches of post-Judgement Day Earth. Some great tributes to the other movies, good characters, and good character/story development. I'm also glad that I watched T3 first (one of the "group" said it didn't matter - however, I think T3 ties in well).

I guess the next "group outing" is GIJoe...

Saw Land of the Lost on opening night, and again for a friends' birthday thing. Not Ferrell's best, but I certainly enjoyed the hell out of it.

Oh, and G.I. Joe looks awesome. Is Eccleston playing Cobra? Never imagined him to play a villain.

The Spirit, finally. It was good.

Wolverine and the X Men.

Decent fun, however, Steve Blums Wolverine is pretty damn generic.

I think Steven Blum is reaching the oversaturatin point where his voice is generic because he is in EVERYTHING.

Berserk (Box Set)

Nope it was for Transformers 2, this morning at 12:00AM in IMAX. Good movie. I'm still recovering... Once again, I won't ruin your experience by mentioning movie details (although IMAX, even on a "small" IMAX screen, is awesome). I will say that IMAX or not, most Transformer fans will be pleased.

For some reason, I thought GIJoe would be out before Transformers 2 (GIJoe in June, Transformers in July). However, Transformers 2 is the movie out in June (be it end of June), and GIJoe doesn't come out until August. (I should consult a release calendar more often.)

GIJoe actually looks really good xDD

I saw Year One. It was really funny, but it wasn't anything extraordinary. If Jack Black hadn't been in it, I think it would have been a lot less predictable. I did like it though, overall. Cera's character was great. He almost canceled out the predictable Blackness... >.>

I saw Transformers: Rise of the Fallen on opening night. I saw Devastator. It made me happy. Good movie, but I think they had too much comedy in it.

Judge Dread (Sci-fi)

I'm not a follower of the comic, but it was decent fun.

I finally saw Bedtime Stories last night... So I guess I'm not that out of touch...at least not too preoccupied.

As for the movie, it's Disney, so expect "clean" (although I like Adam's roundabout way of referring to a girl who "gets around"). However, it still had plenty of Adam Sandlery goodness... (Who knew he could do "family friendly"?) Yes, although clean, all the other stuff that makes his movies good was indeed in there... I liked it.

OK, now I've got to see your usual Adam Sandler movie, so I guess it's on to "You Don't Mess with the Zohan"...

Dance Flick

I love the genre parody movies and this one is pretty funny.

Mrs. Negotiator got to pick last night, so it was "Made of Honor"... As far as "relationship" movies go, it's better than your usual fare - not quite as good as "The Wedding Singer" or "Hitched". Sort of in the realm of "13 going on 30" (i.e. tolerable, funny at times)...

In return, she said that she wants to watch the much-maligned first Transformers film. OK, that's fair...

We watched TF 1 last week. Mrs. Negotiator started dozing off about halfway through it. I don't think she gave it a chance... I mean, even after two TF movies, I'm not 100% on the Bay bandwagon, but I found things to like in TF 1 & 2 (Sam's parents nonwithstanding).

We rented "Yes Man" last week. Great movie...

Saw Funny People on Thursday night.

I get upset when Hollywood markets drama/comedy movies as mostly comedy.

UPDATE: Sorry, I needed to leave for the theater shortly after I posted, so I wouldn't miss the show. It was a free Admit Two pass given out by a local comic book store. OK, on to the movie:

You know by now that I hate to give away anything significant about films, and thus potentially ruin someone's movie experience. So I will keep it short and sweet, and quite vague... I had some issues with a few of the special effects, but overall I think I was just served a healthy serving of awesomage, with a hint of humor (just a hint, just enough). Also, for the lactose-intolerant folks out there, I didn't detect any cheese in this one... 8)

On a side note, I did see the Avatar: T.L.A. trailer, as done by M. Night Shamalan. I think it could potentially be OK, as I could not see this particular trailer "having all the good scenes"...

Squidbillies Vol.1

One of AS better shows that really grew on me as I watched it.

A lot like Transformers, in that it's a grown-up big screen version of a beloved childhood cartoon that was a glorified toy commercial. But it didn't take itself as seriously.

I watch this last Saturday during Sci-fi's usaul B Movie premieres. It's a movie from The Asylum, so it's a cheap knock off of the latest Terminator movie. In short it was pretty bad, but in a good way.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop - Boy have critics panned this film. I don't know if it's because it's a tried and true Happy Madison film (with a Happy Madison cast), or something else. However, I really liked this movie. So it's got some silly stuff, so what? That doesn't hurt a film in my eyes. If you're not looking for great drama, this one's OK...


Yeah, TF2 was no masterpiece... Sometimes better than TF1, sometimes worse... I still consider it an OK movie for it's good scenes (slightly more good than bad scenes). However, I still don't like how they portray "Mr. & Mrs. Sparkplug", and even I, mediocre writer that I am, could have written some scenes/dialog better... It would help alot if they studied the back story more...

"Taking Woodstock" slow but good.

The Snuke (South Park)

Good times.

Finally got to catch up on a few older movies:

"Meet Dave" (Eddy Murphy) - Good movie. Seemed like MIB crossed with Galaxy Quest, with a little Honey I Shrunk the Kids (just a little, though). Very slickly done. Humor, but not alot of over-the-top stuff. Short (90 minutes), but entertaining.

"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (Johnny Depp) -  I really liked this film. Great character portrayals, very subtle special effects, great attention to the details of the original story, and tributes to the first film. I also like how they tell about Wonka's childhood. However, I still like the 1st movie (especially when Wilder calmly says "Wait. Stop. Don't.", instead of yelling "Wait! Stop! Don't!" when the bad kids choose to put themselves in harms way). I guess I like them equally...

"Orange County" - Good film. Kind of weird at times, but a good film.

Not quite what I expected, but still awesome.

Finally, I got to watch "You Don't Mess with the Zohan" on Monday. I'll grant that it's a little different from his usual movies. I think he wanted you to laugh and think a little (about "the American dream" and not believing stereotypes). It made for a nice birthday...

When this first came out I thought it looked stupid.

Then I saw it on HBO once and I liked it. Adam Sandlers movies since Happy Gilmore pretty much suck. But this was legitimately amusing I thought.

AMC is running the original Night of the living dead currently, as its haloween. If you have not seen this go watch it right now or I will never respect you.

Paranormal Activity

It had some refreshing ideas, but ultimately underwhelming.

Couples Retreat with Mrs. Negotiator. We got free tickets, so I can't really complain, but this movie was just OK, even though it does have Vince Vaughan in it.

My friends and I went to watch New Moon, dressed up in full Harry Potter garb, shouting random catch-phrases. Me and another dude trolled the  theatre, running around the hallway on brooms, drumming up the crowd. Oddly enough, security didn't even confiscate our brooms. We also shouted incongruous HP prhases during "tense" moments of the movie. High fives and love all around.

That alone almost makes me want to go see it...Just so I can steal your idea, give you credit for it, and enjoy myself at a movie I don't think I could possibly enjoy.

In other news, Avatar in 3D. Actually, I thought it was a good movie. Good story and blah blah..Though, it was very predictable with how movies these days go. Put that aside and you have a rather good movie, full of almost nude female types.

I fuckin missed out on the 3D Imax experience, but I could imagine how epic it must have looked.

Story was predictable but well executed, I thought. Gorgeous to look at. The movie was like Deviantart on a good day, come to life.

Okay Char, I noticed two plot holes. Tell me if they bother you:

1) When Sully first got separated from the science team. Don't they have tracking devices? Why don't expensive Avatar bodies have those attached?

2) When the heroes were making their escape in the gunship. I would assume that the main human base, a military base, would have some kind of anti-aircraft system, which would have shot them down.

#1. Oh yeah. I was wondering about that myself. Or why it seemed to take so long for them to go "Where's the Avatar?" They were freaking out saying he'd die, but if they were that worried, they would've just yanked him.

#2. You'd think, especially considering the air squadron of birds that they had to fight against anyway.

I'd like to make a note that Sigourney Weaver looked damn good as an avatar.

Haha, she was the best character in the whole movie! And hell yeah she did. She looked like a friendly teddy bear, and I wanted to squeeze her.

It was ok. Certainly the SPX where amazing, but I hate global warming propaganda forced down my throat. Oh yeah, it's there alright.

Black Dynamite.

A blackspoitation flick from the 70's, but it came out last year.

I saw Avatar yesterday. It was one of the worst movies I've seen in my life. That's what happens when thousands of talented artists are forced to work for an uncreative writer/director. The guys in charge just had no self control. It was like "This will be the biggest scene!... but make this next scene even more impressive!!! No... MORE IMPRESSIVE!!!! MAKE EVERYTHING GLOW ALL THE TIME!!!!"  It's not the effects I had a problem with (I do 3D modeling and rigging myself), but it was used so irresponsibly. I felt like I was watching a one-billion dollar Geocities page. Also... the story sucked. Story is more important than effects. It's what gives them their zing.


I saw Daybreakers too. That movie I liked. It was like a high budget SciFi original. Total B-movie.

Some otaku blogger named Darkmirage suggested that the glowy effects were an attempt to show the Na'vi night vision. Then it might make sense for footsteps to make glow spots, or for many things to glow, due to the heat signatures they leave behind. But yeah, without an explanation, it all seems like pointless flair.

The story wasn't bad in itself, just predictable. I do think the characters were rather flat, though. Jake Sully is the only name I remember. Sigourney Weaver was the only character I liked.

I saw the original Terminator on TV the other day. I know I am way behind on the times.  :D
Is it worth the $7 to see Avatar? I hear it's a nerds wet dream, but that's not as convincing as say a review by a non blogging nerd.

If you a gourmand of battles, then yes. I think the battles are almost perfect.

If you're the artistic type, then also yes, because it's very nice to drink in all the visuals. The movie reminded me of good DeviantArt come to life.

Most importantly, though, you'll understand all the stupid in-jokes that will pop up over the next few years. Or to put it another way, you won't be woefully behind the times as you were with Terminator. :-P

I SORT OF thought it was, but then again I'd never seen a 3d movie.

If I'd watched it in...well. Regular format, I'm pretty sure I'd have loathed it.

As it is...I really can't seperate the movie from its effects, because without the effects theres really not a hell of alot there.

But if you have three hours to kill and a 3d showing (I can only speak for the real-d, or whatever its called, one) then...sure, go for it.

edit: Also if you've just seen Terminator and then see avatar? You'll definately be going "What the hell happened to James Cameron"

This doesn't surprise me. As much as I liked terminator, which is a lot, Cameron always struck me as a guy who's wayyy more interested in effects technology, or hell, just technology in general (Remember after titanic came out he apparently just became fixated on submarines for a couple of years?)

Just finished watching Full Metal Panic...then Star Trek (the new one)...then Repo again, but I watch it almost every night.

And can someone tell me what G-Failure (aka G-Savior) has to do with anything? I know, a horrid attempt at live action Gundam, but it takes place in the Universal Century, and yet has no relevance to it at all.

Makes for a good device for elevating my 360 off of the carpet in the living room though.

The Story of Ricky.

My friend George burned me a copy of this classic example of grade Z cheese. The violence and gore are so over the top it's laugh out load funny, yet the gore is also poorly done. For example, when one of the gang leaders in the is beating up some old dude and Ricky comes in to stop it, he trips him and he falls on his hail board face first, well, at least his cheaply made dummy does.

I saw Avatar in 3D IMAX yesterday, and it was pretty damn awesome. One of my friends said to imagine the Colonel guy is Duke Nukem. It adds so much unintentional comedy!

All of my friends today are like "I want to live on Pandora!" So does that make me a bad person for wanting one of those twin-rotor helicopter things?

I still think Aliens is Cameron's best movie, man. Game over.

Was it the real3d version or..I know theres a couple of 3d projection modes (if they gave you black framed glasses when you went in, its the real3d one)

Like I've said to everybody who asked me about it, "If you see it, either see the 3d version or don't bother" (apparently theres a 2d version). The visuals are just insane, I totally get how and why this took cameron so long to make. Everything else is...lackluster, and I'm probably being nice.

Why its nominated for anything but the technical achievement award I don't know. (It deserves the HELL out of that though, cause goddamn)


This honestly was probably the most genuinely entertaining movie I've seen in the past year if not longer, and I'm fully confident the guy who played the nazi will win best supporting actor, but if the movie itself somehow got best picture I'd be overjoyed.

Whats funny is kill bill part 2 and death proof had me going "Eh..maybe tarantino peaked, or maybe I just don't like his stuff as much anymore". This totally and competely makes up for those and then some.

IMAX-3D was only $1 more, but I ended up seeing Avatar in regular 3D. I thought the effects were good but not because of the 3D... Yeah, the Colonel did have a "Duke" kind of personality... How about the battle mechs? The HUGE bayonets on the mech guns were a nice touch, along with the realistic controls (the mechs imitate all the pilot's gestures). I thought the "unobtainium" was great under-the-radar sarcasm. I liked the detailed look at Na'vi culture. However, because of the fanaticism/backlash regarding this picture (especially around Oscar time), I had to balance my opinion by stating that even though I dug the picture, the Old Negotiator won't be doing any Na'vi cosplay. M'kay? Also, I can't see why this film should clean up at the Oscars, either, but it probably will.

As far as Terminator goes, have seen the 3rd and 4th movies, and thought they were cool.

Rented "Benjamin Button" and thought it was "cool", rented "Funny People" and thought it was "just OK", and rented "The Hangover" and thought it was "awesome!"

Broke out Transformers ROTF again, to watch for "Easter eggs". It's still a "good" movie in my book, even if I want to punch Michael Bay right in the face every time I see the Autobot Twins -- and if anyone were to communicate via spliced broadcast audio, wouldn't it be Blaster?

P.S. ...and yes Inglorious Basterds looks like something I should check out...

Saw "Alice in Wonderland".  Still have mixed feelings about it, but it was entertaining enough.  I didn't have very high expectations for it, though, so maybe that's why I was easily pleased.  The pretty visuals help balance out with the mediocre story. 

The mechs were awesomely bad ass. I liked how they actually had a use as loaders, too. Kind of like they decided "hey, we have these big robot loader things, the Na'vi can't do much to them, let's give them huge machine guns!"

And the unobtanium, yeah. The first time they said it I was like "they actually named the magic material Unobtanium?" I couldn't decide if it was awesomely geeky, or they were just hoping nobody in the audience knew anything about engineering.

Tried to see Alice in Wonderland, but the 6:35 IMAX show sold out before we got there.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that a couple days ago I saw The Hurt Locker. Really good movie, but I think D9 or Inglourious Basterds should have won best picture.

Yeah, I heard the conflict all comes down to one massive epic battle. Sounds kind of disappointing; I expect a story in Wonderland to resolve itself in a more cerebral fashion.


I love it when writers envision multiple uses for anything in their world. Makes it more robust.

I'm hopefully seeing Shutter Island next weekend. I'm surprised nobody has seen it already. It's a Scorcese film. Surely it must be entertaining.

The book was really, really, good. Hopefully the film is, too.

Alice in Wonderland

Better IMAX 3D film then Avatar.

Saw Alice in Wonderland in 3d.
That is one fucking demented movie. I'm glad I didn't take my little sis to see it. She'd have nightmares for weeks, I however did enjoy it. Anyone else notice all of Tim Burton's films end with a loop hole, and after the credits role you can see some extra stuff. Best example is a nightmare before Christmas. apparently Jack had four kids with Sally. I've never watched till the end of the credits, so I have no idea if it's true though.

Green Zone

I never read the book it's based on (I think it's called "Imperial life in the emerald city"? I remember seeing an interview with the author on the daily show and thinking "Huh sounds neat"), so how closely it hewed to the book I have no clue

...Probably not much, main character and some CIA guy seem to just go off and do their own thing through half of it. I'm pretty sure the book was more about the downright comical ineptitude of the coalition provisional authority/Paul Bremmer dropping the brown acid and refusing to use the republican guard in the stabilization.

Having said this, I liked it. It sorta pares everything down into a political thriller/action movie context but it worked pretty well.


Maybe it's just me, but all I could think of when it got to that was if they took the power-loader from the ending of aliens and put guns on it.

In fact all throughout the film, I kept half-expecting to see some little easter egg weyland-yutani logo on one of the aircraft or something (cause..yeah, "malevolent corporatized military force seeks supertechnology/weapon from alien civilization". It seemed like a tiny wink to the audience of "Hey where have you seen that before" was coming.)


No, but then again I found the whole na'vi/linking into organic structures/mass-conciousness thing mildly disturbing because on some weird visual level it reminded me of this horror manga I shouldn't have read at 3:40 am. He didn't direct this. I'm not even sure he completely wrote the script (think it was adapted off a vague outline he produced? Not sure)

EDIT: Scratch that. I switched to The Princess Bride. Full of quotes, it is. Like..."You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

It most definitely was. It gripped me with visceral suspence, fear and sadness. It comesat you from every angle. Absolutely gorgeous to look at, too. It was almost melodramatic, almost cheesy at the beginning, but in a way that told me this movie was going to give me exactly what I wanted: a grandiose, diabolical scheme to navigate.

Back to Die Hard 2. Need to go to bed. I like sleeping to the sounds of gunshots. I suppose I could watch Apocalypse Now, but that's split between two discs, and I won't be awake to change them.

Fantastic Mr. Fox

Not quite "fantastic" but still really good.

Watchmen, in all it's entirety. Because most of the time I only saw parts of the movie because something always disrupted my movie watching.

Three moviegoers walk in the theater, two with "Movie Money" certificates. The cashier presented the tickets. Concessions are bought, and our trio heads back to their seats...

Shortly after, the lights dim, and the previews appear: Prince of Persia...OK, a J.J. Abrams teaser...so-so, and Avatar: The Last Airbender...Cool.

Then the words appeared: IRON MAN 2. Awesomeness ensued... 8)


I am proud to say that I was part of that trio, and one of the holders of "Movie Money", which means my ticket cost $0 (although I gave back $4 for the Twizzlers, but hey). I got said certificate with a CD for a band named after electricity from a store named after a bullseye. Great little "field trip"...

Cool. I wanna see that. is it as awesome as it claims to be?

Iron Man 2

Was indeed very awesome. The J.J Abrams trailer was interesting, and I'll be keeping an eye out for it.

Iron Man 2, as well! I was drunk the entire time (as in tradition to when I saw the first one), but it was completely amazing. I may not like RDJ all that much, but he plays a good Tony Stark. I also have the biggest crush on Pepper Potts.

As for the JJ Abrams trailer, I'm totally hoping (from what I've heard about the movie and seen on Fringe...) it's going to be Parasite Eve. ;)

It was okay, but way too rushed, and I couldn't find myself caring about any of the characters.

I watched part of the Godfather part 2.
I didn't get to finish it sadly. But now I've at least seen part of the godfather.

Well, that was both retarded and ridiculous at the same time. If nothing else better is playing in your area, you might find it worth the matinee price.

Oh, and no where near as good as Wayne's World. Whatever idiot wrote that . . . they're just wrong.

I went to see Iron Man 2. Can't wait for thor to come out.
For those who are confused by that Thor comment: At the end of iron man, after the credits, it shows thor's hammer. So either Iron man 3 has Thor in it or Thor gets his own movie.

Pretty sure Thor's getting his own movie, and then he'll show up in the Avengers movie, along with Iron Man and The Hulk.

The thor movie exists, and is being directed by Kenneth Branagh

Yeah, like has already been said apparently whats happening is they're gonna do thor, and a captain america movie, then tie all of the relevant characters (which I guess is..iron man, hulk, thor, captain america) into an Avengers movie. I never read the avengers comic so I dunno if thats what constitutes them.

Oh and speaking of films, Dennis Hopper died.  :-[

Avengers lineups change all the time. They can put just about any character they want on the team. I think with a big budget movie they'll play it safe and just do the guys you mentioned plus Nick Fury, Black Widow, and maybe one other random guy to mix it up (Hawkeye would rule).

By the way, do any of you guys actually read comics? I'll make a thread if you do, but there's only like 5 people on this forum, so the chances are pretty slim.
