Title: Tiger and Bunny
Post by: Yuko-san on July 29, 2011, 04:59:48 PM
The maker of Big O Keiichi Sato has made a new anime called Tiger and Bunny.

The plot as far as I can tell;
Super powered people called NEXT showed up 45 years ago (Um, lol?), and started using their powers for good. Some NEXT are bad, as you can imagine, but the good seem to out weigh the bad (only on episode 3 though). The anime centers on a man named Kotetsu T. Kaburagi and a Barnaby Brooks Jr. AKA Tiger and Bunny. The NEXT that are good live in a re-imagined version of New York (again um, lol?) called Sternbild City. The Super powered NEXT are mostly on a TV series and are sponsored by companies, such as pepsi nex and anime network, and they all aspire to be king of heros. They take out petty crooks and Big time villains, which adds to a heroes respective point score. At the end of a tv season the hero with the highest score is King of Heroes.

So after a few episodes I gathered that Sato would rather work on Big O. The similarities on top are nill, similarities on a secondary layer are huge. In episode 15 there is a robot that looks like a slightly more childish version of Dorothy named Cis (chisu in Japanese), they are both robots and they have the same freaking voice actor. Sadly it seems bad things happen to Cis, but from the way she acts she was more on level with Destiny a bit. I think she's coming back, but not sure. Chisu was also designed after Dorothy. Also the years 40 and 45 are too close for comfort. And some of the Japanese voice actors from Big O show up. Sky High, the king of heroes at the start of the series, sounds a hell of a lot like Roger.

In quick summary go watch this already. It's only in Japanese, but there are subtitles.

Well, way to mark your spoilers there Yuko. That ep 15 reference is actually a major plot point in the episode.

In the same episode, Roger's japanese voice actor is recruited as Rotwang.... yet another homage to Big O, and to Metropolis. Aside from those bits though, it's a great stand alone series and I really really really cannot wait for the upcoming episodes.

I hadn't even known about the connection between T&B and TBO until episode 15.

Oh hey, 18's out (http://www.hulu.com/tiger-and-bunny)...

Tiger and Bunny is probably the best anime I've seen in years and a welcome breath of fresh air.

It's so popular in Japan they're releasing the boxset early. It's slated for release here in the US around December of January next year. I want this in English bad. The subtitles aren't bad, but sometimes they get things wrong and it's annoying.

And I didn't give anything away really. I just said that Cis (turns out my Japanese font is installed wrong on this machine, so I kept reading her name as chisu) and Dorothy look alike and that shit happens. Which is like a few animes Sato has worked on. Some character called Maya actually dresses like her on purpose in an episode of some magic girl anime. The character even says as much. Can't remember which anime, but the guy that made K-on had a hand in it.

As far as I can tell, no company has picked up rights for T&B outside streaming, and there's no way Japan will release a boxset by December.

Bandai is releasing the box set in Japan by December. I thought I read something about an American voice over studio picking this up. Oh well if we can get it at all in English I'd be happy.

Aand, bump.

I've finally watched up to episode nine. My internet is so slow I'm lucky if I can watch and episode every few days, but last night it worked and I got to watch 4 episodes in a row.

I can say after watching this much that the story moves progressively for one hero, while for the other the problems he faces almost never face the lime light. One hero get most of the episode to deal with problems, while the other might get 2 minutes every other episode to work on his. Kinda slow character progression, but for a short series it works.

I still think sato would rather work on Big O for all the references we see per-episode. Though most are only in the background and miniscule at best. While others, as I have mentioned, show up so clear you couldn't miss it if you where blind.

Also small spoiler for episode 8-9 that won't ruin much of anything but I think should be known. There a naked dude that shows up for about 20-30 seconds for both those episodes, and I kinda would've like a partial nudity warning, seeing as my family has the tendency to walk into my room at random. You won't see much, but still... Would have been nice.

Nice. But why are they doing this is the question? It must be a huge showdown is all I can think.

Money from ticket sales probably

Money from ticket sales probably

perhaps. But if Vizmedia is live streaming while it is also in theaters I have a feeling ticket sales won't be that good.
Are they releasing toys for this show by any chance? I want a bunny action figure.

Viz's streams are limited to North America.

And there will be a figure line (http://kamen-rider-gg.blogspot.com/2011/07/tiger-bunny-product-display-tamashii.html).

Why is it the only time I ever wanted anime characters to be real both animes are made by the same guy?

And Viz is only streaming here? I'm kinda surprised by that. Japan usually leaves the rest of the world out. Do we have to pay to stream?

The hype on TvTropes is that Tiger&Bunny is one of the greatest American Superhero comics never (yet) printed. Seriously! And I completely agree with them. It's really frakking good.

No, the episodes are available on Hulu and VizAnime.com. I don't think having a Hulu Plus account gets you any added benefits.

Haven't yet watched episode 21, since Hulu's captions were fucked until sometime last night, and that kinda sapped all my motivation to catch up legally.

Welp I'm only on episode 19. And I'm going to finish up till 21 today while at school. Aw college, learning at my own pace and free internet. What more do I need besides food?

I've been using hulu, but I was wondering about viz streaming. Sometimes with anime live streaming you have to pay $.99 to watch something.

And bump.
I've been meaning to put what I think will happen in episode 23 for a week, but I've been too busy.

so in spoilers I'll tell you, if i could find the fucking spoiler button.

But I think I know what is going to happen, it's not too hard to figure out if you watch a ton of crime detective shows.

It's amazingly well written. I mean, going into Ep 22, people were asking "what's Kotetsu gonna do?! What's his plan??" .... and well... typical Kotetsu. But even the little things like having him call out Antonio after all is said and done, that's great writing. I can't wait for ep 23 to come out today. So many theories as to how he's gonna get Barnaby back on his side, only one way to find out! ;D

I just wanted to post where I think a few of the characters base designs come from.
We all know about Cis, but what about bunny? Or blue rose or everyone else.

So I'm going to post some the characters and where I think some of them are from

First up bunny. Bunny base design Kinda reminds me of the Law Hero (http://megamitensei.wikia.com/wiki/Law_Hero) from Shin Megami Tensei. It's rather undeniable that bunny's base design come from him. As to the blonde hair and green eyes, no idea.

Blue rose reminds me of the typical Japanese super star. Like Hatsune Miku, but with super powers.

As I run across more characters that look similar I'll post. But I saw law hero about a week ago and couldn't deny they look alike. As you know the Japanese show love for other shows, games, what have you, by putting motifs in what they make.

Title: Re: Tiger and Bunny
Post by: Professor Vogler on September 08, 2011, 02:47:03 AM
I don't think Barnaby has anything to do with Shin Megami Tensei. If anything he seems similar in design to the cool/troubled-past Gundam pilots like Lockon Stratos, or more likely just the perception of a very sure of himself Japanese young adult typically portrayed in Anime. I swear his costume design at the very least isn't awfully original, so pinpointing it as based on something seems irrelevant.

Title: Re: Tiger and Bunny
Post by: Yuko-san on September 09, 2011, 07:53:25 PM
Did you read the law hero's profile? He was being used by god as a way to erase evil. While Barnaby wasn't being used by god, he was being used by someone with huge influence to destroy evil, or at least Marverks enemies. The similarity's are too many just to be coincidence. Law Hero also complains about being connected to chaos hero and the protagonist.

It's true the design isn't original, not by any means. But I think it's kinda funny how Keichi Sato borrows from his previous works or his favorite tv shows and video games.

Ya ever wondered why Roger looked like Bruce Wayne? It had more to do then just the Batman animators working on Big O.

Tiger and Bunny is officially getting a dub. Viz mentioned that the dub is now is pre-production and Sunrise is involved in some capacity, so here's hoping for NYAV West. God, I'm so freakin' happy this isn't a Funi dub, because their work the last few years has been pretty weak with a few exceptions.

Heard about that. You can also know get your T and B swag on. Shirts, jackets, key chains and earrings have been released for the series.

Also if you want to wait till that stuff makes it to America you'll have to go to hot topic. They now have the rights to distribute t and b stuff.

Not surprised this is happening only that it took them so long to announce it. Seriously, show probably has the most mainstream appeal of any anime from that past couple seasons.

Indeed. I'm really hoping it takes off over here and can get some mainstream appeal. The U.S hasn't had a huge mainstream show since what, Bebop maybe a few of the shonen jump shows and a few more.

I think Black Lagoon could have had a shot, if it weren't for Geneon's departure, but Bebop is probably the latest example.

So not only is T&B getting a dub at some point (Star Driver is only getting a DVD release in America, no dub?!) but it's also getting TWO MOVIES IN 2012.

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2011-11-13/tiger-and-bunny-anime-gets-2-films-starting-in-2012

And the fandom rejoiced!

Sweet. But doesn't it seem a bit early for a movie? Or will this just make the T&B show more popular?

I hope they start the second season before they make a movie. It would give more background for the movie to build on.

So I heard the dub might be released by April this year. Looking forward to it. I just hope they dont make Kotetsu or Bunny to whiny. Or make them sound like kids... Anyone else think viz is way off the make labeling this a 6-12 your old boys show for American release when its a teen boys show in japan?

Title: Re: Tiger and Bunny

I'm not worried about Viz, but the voice acting company they may hire to help. Some subbing companies are great, and then others make you wonder. Of course the voice actor choice is also important.

April seems too soon, even from February.

Teen boys, Yuko-san? The show is clearly aimed at middle-aged women.

I'm curious to see who they get to dub it. Viz has gotten L.A based studios recently for stuff like Naruto, Monster and Bleach. I think the last thing Ocean has done for Viz was InuYasha.

But I'm not middle aged and I like it. I'm in my 20's, but you do have a point, some things come off as cougarish.
