City of Amnesia

Samarai Champloo was a great anime, even "butchered for broadcast TV", and not just because Steven Blum voiced one of the characters. The interplay between the characters was great, the anachronisms were clever (although one of the last few episodes was a little weird), and the action was intense (remember, George Lucas based the Jedi knights on samurai...). In fact, I used the term, "Kenobi-ed", to describe a few of the fighting techniques (like Obi-Wan in the cantina...draw and swing...fast!). Can you overlay Hip-Hop Culture on Edo Period Japan? I must be the only person that dislikes Samurai Champloo. The only thing "Hip Hop" about the show was the opening, the rest of the music sounded more techno and generic J-Pop. And I do like Steven Blum but like Vegeta said, he's in way to much these days.

But it was a decent watch, not something I would buy though.

And shit, that's a lot of work. He was in Pirates 3 and Are You Afraid of the Dark? Another question is, there are Are You Afraid of the Dark episodes in 2007? WTF?

I never get to see all of Champloo in order.  I mean.. I've seen all the episodes, but not consecutively, if that makes any sense, but I did like it a lot.  I'm no expert on hip-hop, so I can't judge the soundtrack in that regard, but I did like the music quite a bit too.

Also, maybe I'm crazy, but I don't care if Steven Blum is in too many things, he has the sexiest voice of any person ever alive in the history of ever and I'd listen to him read the phone book.

In the case of Samurai Champloo, yeah.

But SC had it's moments, and while not a bad show, it's not something I'd buy.

That is completely and unabashedly epic.

There are better, sexier voices than Blum. Blum has the exact same voice in every single role he does, ever.

Wait, Gaddes, the "Hip Hop culture" reference was just for humorous effect. It was derived from the SC descriptions on some anime websites, that I read to catch up on missed episodes. I didn't mean to start a whole music debate.  Not that I haven't heard Hip Hop before, but actually, I like to rock... ;D Besides, didn't the main theme sound more like some kind of "Club Mix"? Actually, I got the impression that the only thing really "Hip Hop" were some of the personalities...


Roger's and Mugen's voices didn't sound the same or use the same wording, so I didn't initially realize that Steven voiced both of them, and I have a very good ear. Only after hearing some lines from Big O did I hear something familiar in Roger's voice, and trace it back to Steven Blum. In fact, I didn't recognize Crispin Freeman's voice either, and that's after several episodes of Eureka Seven. So then, I take it all of Steven's other characters sound like "Roger Smith"? 8)

I've only heard two Steven Blum character voices, so I can only judge them. Roger and Mugen, for the most part, sounded like two completely different people, with unique voices and mannerisms. An actor's popularity doesn't prevent me from being entertained. Now if they're arrogant, instead of being very grateful, then I lose interest...


Actually, it was the fact that the characters were rarely recognized by foes that made it interesting. No "So, ????, you've come here to stop me! Prepare for extinction..." stuff... No BIG HERO vs. BIG VILLIAN stuff... I'll admit, that works for some series, but this series worked well without it, and still managed some decent fight scenes.
OK, so Mugen was usually arrogant, and ready with a good catchphrase. No one even mentioned his crude sense of humor... ;D

Eye candy?!? Where? I remember alot of dark, ugly, and/or caricatured stuff in that series, and a little nice animation and artwork... Eye candy doesn't work for me, so there must have been a little more to this series... I barely got through 3 Star Wars "prequels" full of eye candy... :)


You hit the nail right on the head. It was entertaining... Please don't confuse my phrase "great anime"
for the phrase "one of the great animes". In my case, it provided some cheap laughs after Eureka Seven...

Well, the more you hear of a voice actor, the easier it is to recognize them, even when they aren't using their typical range.

SamCham's certainly a fun show, and though the Hip Hop aspect put me off a bit at first, I really started to enjoy the music. Even picked up both the soundtracks.

Bummer on two counts:

I never really...was that impressed with this show. But the "HE DOES ALOT OF VOICES", yeah thats not...terribly uncommon. Oh also, I haven't even heard of half of those..I don't know what 'ben 10' is, I loathe chobits, and I'd heard the majority of those games were forgettable tie-ins

On a similar note, I'd venture to guess Phil La Marr is pretty high up there in terms of voice work, since he's apparently in EVERYTHING..he also played marvin in pulp fiction (the guy whos accidentally shot)

I just fail to see what makes game companies and anime development and translation studios automatically go "We need a guy voice. Let's go with Steve Blum!"

I'm guessing its more like, "We need a guy voice.  Lets hold an audition." or "We need a guy voice.  Who was the guy who voiced [insert Blum character here]?  That sold well, lets get him."

I caught the Adult Swim dub by accident tonight. I'm so pleased to hear that Instro's voice actor gets to play Jin. Pretty good match, I think... and besides, Instro was one of my Big O favs.

Did he really? I never noticed that before. I guess I'll have to pay a bit more attention to Instro next time I watch one of the episodes he's featured in.

i rather do. It depends on the type of rap. i like the kind that is mixed with singing, that isn't self absorbed, and that doesn't have a jarring rythm, which are all traits of the opening theme.

I didn't mind the opening theme, but I also don't like a lot of rap. Just me being me. This show was all right, but there were (and still are) much better ones out there.

Sporadic? I can see it. The show didn't really seem to go anywhere. It was like Cowboy Bebop in feudal Japan.

It was because there was only one person driving the plot: Fuu. Fuu's quest is the only thing that keeps the plot moving. So when the guys are fighting, the plot goes nowhere. When Fuu get's captured, the plot goes nowhere. If the trail of clues temporarily runs dry for Fuu...yep you guessed it...

Yeah, I'm not big on the whole urban/rap/hip-hop thing, and I honestly wouldn't have noticed much of it if I hadn't seen someone's "hip-hop meets Edo" sales pitch. I don't even know much about Edo period Japan.

But hey, don't get me wrong, I still got some laughs out of it. Sometimes, even stupid, random stuff can be funny.

What was Fuu's quest supposed to be? even after watching several episodes on demand i could never figure it....

Yes, exactly, which begged the question "Well, what do sunflowers smell like?" No, you're right he was her dad. I think he may have left because the shogunate ordered his death? I know he was one of the Christian worshippers of the Edo period. I'm not sure, having only watched it once. Maybe it will make sense if I catch a few episodes of it before Big O. It's on Adult Swim Saturday again.
