Title: The Most Obvious Question... Post by: R. Daniel 01 on October 09, 2007, 07:50:04 PM ... For an animé forum, but one that few seem to ask is: why do you like animé?
I'm an imaginative glutton. I love looking at art and I love hearing stories. Animation is the wedding of the two, so it just about hypnotizes me. Then, animé has more license. There's the privilege to make something that's doesn't end all wrapped up nice and neat, or that plays with a formula in an unusual way. Usually the privilege ends up abused or wasted, but it had the opportunity in the first place, so there's potential. But the most decisive factor seems to be the art-appreciation part. Seems to me, a liking for form or for abstraction leads to animé. Title: Re: The Most Obvious Question... Post by: Mike on October 09, 2007, 09:08:01 PM Destruction on a massive scale, possibly including giant robots, makes the inner caveman happy.
Plus a lot of animes have a good story that really pulls you in. And it's often drawn pretty. [ooo shiny things] Title: Re: The Most Obvious Question... Post by: Dark-O on October 09, 2007, 11:02:44 PM Giant robots grab my interest for years since Transformers of the 80's. Big-O would be my art decko anime in my favorite style of Batman The Animated Series. Plus the infamous tag line from the commercials. "Good guys still wear black".

Heh, that's an awesome program, isn't it? I've never been able to really pin down a reason I like anime, but do I really need one? Title: Re: The Most Obvious Question... Post by: R. Daniel 01 on October 13, 2007, 01:14:29 PM I've never been able to really pin down a reason I like anime, but do I really need one? You're right, and that's the philosophy I should adopt. Plus, there's plenty of conventional media that's worse than bad animé. But I can't let it go! When I look at all the animé that's downright exploitative, and consider many peoples' reaction to anything besides Sports Center, I feel like I need a defense. I want something that puts animé into context with other media, while avoiding words like "adolescent" and "power fantasy." I want it when I talk to that artistic acquaintance who's sitting on the fence, or to that interviewer, who wants to know just what drove your application to X-Studios. So, I'm curious to see if anybody has thought up anything similar to my first post. Title: Re: The Most Obvious Question... I understand what you're saying, Daniel, but it's a question you hae to find an answer to for yourself. After all, there are many good reasons to like any particular anime. Title: Re: The Most Obvious Question... Post by: DOMON KASSHU! on October 15, 2007, 01:33:11 AM I don't like animé overall. I like many different kinds of animation, and it just so happens my number one favorite animated show is from Japan. Astro Boy, Dragon Ball Z, Thundercats and He-Man, I like them all equally.
And Swat Kats. Can't forget the Swat Kats. War. Title: Re: The Most Obvious Question... Post by: Professor Vogler on October 15, 2007, 10:42:29 PM I don't like animé overall. Post by: The Final Negotiator on October 16, 2007, 12:09:31 PM ...and a dash of Mach 5, Galaxy Rangers, and Mighty Orbots. Yes, must have Orbots...
http://youtube.com/watch?v=SLcJXR7twoQ http://youtube.com/watch?v=gg_jOr0Hjvg Megas XLR sounds cool, though. I've also got to look for Gurren Laggan... I see anime as one art form showing the full potential of animation. I've been always been a fan of animation, from Warner Bros. Cartoons, MGM Cartoons, Disney, and Don Bluth; to the original animated versions of "Charlotte's Web", "The Hobbit", and "The Lord of the Rings"; to Speed Racer, G-Force, and Starblazers (as a kid, I didn't know the last 3 shows were dubbed). I even appreciate The Simpsons... :) Animation was always able to tell stories that you couldn't in real life. Even to this day, CGI and other special effects can only go so far. Also yes, Mike, I do like to see stuff blown up...preferrably with hundreds of missiles launched from many small compartments. 8) Vegeta: Thundercats was a big win. Silverhawks, not so much, but OK. He-Man was cool, and actually made a great live-action movie. Astro Boy is cool. I may have seen Swat Cats, but unfortunately not Dragon Ball Z, which is surprising because it's everywhere. .The Final Negotiator. P.S. As kids, my friends and I were exposed to anime through toys. There used to be these 2-foot tall "Shogun Warriors" toys. One character was Mazinga...One hand shot 3 finger missiles, the other hand was launchable. Awesome! Gobots, Transformers, and Robotech arrived later. Somewhere, I've got a mini SDF-1, three superdeformed veritechs, an Alpha model, and a Cyclone model, and plenty of Transformers and Gobots. Title: Re: The Most Obvious Question... Post by: DOMON KASSHU! on October 16, 2007, 05:36:08 PM I got into Robotech through my dad's Macross sourcebooks from Palladium RPG. Interesting stuff, and fun. I got into Zoids from those old 80s figures that you built yourself, too. Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z... Oh, some anime on Sci-Fi channel, had a guy with an 8-ball for a helmet or a head or something...

Can't say i agree there...I don't think we are retarded. Maybe a little ADD, or ADHD, but most certainly not retarded. I have to figure out how to explian this to the parent of my anime kids... Title: Re: The Most Obvious Question... Post by: Mike on October 16, 2007, 11:39:16 PM The first anime I can remember seeing was Zieram. That was pretty cool.
I saw Galaxy Express 999 when I was like 12, and it was incredibly confusing. Mostly because I was 12. There was some movie I saw once, where this old guy was put in a special bed that took care of all his needs, but then his mind took over the bed and it started absorbing other machinery and made a giant body out of junk and cars and stuff. Then it met another similar junk robot that was made by an old woman in a similar computerbed...I forget what it was called, but it was cool. Title: Re: The Most Obvious Question... Post by: DOMON KASSHU! on October 17, 2007, 04:03:24 AM OH! I forgot Heavy Metal. How could forget that? The animation was phenomenal.

What do you kids tell your parents? Title: Re: The Most Obvious Question... Post by: DOMON KASSHU! on October 17, 2007, 09:24:23 PM What should I tell him? My dad loves Ghost in the Shell, Gundam MS 08th Team, Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z... Astro Boy. So I don't have to justify myself to him, or to anyone for that matter.
War. Title: Re: The Most Obvious Question... Post by: Bllue on October 19, 2007, 06:35:14 PM Lucky...
I only am able to watch because my 6 year old brother watched cartoons all day any way. Title: Re: The Most Obvious Question... Post by: DOMON KASSHU! on October 30, 2007, 01:08:38 PM Well, I draw. A lot. And I enjoy watching animation and different cartoons to see different styles and methods of storytelling in action. It's interesting, really.

Title: Re: The Most Obvious Question... Post by: Bllue on March 11, 2008, 12:16:13 AM I think that picture made me pee a little. >_>.... i have a girl in anime club whose mom thinks anime is the root of all evil. that makes her not even try to participate in the discussions about a field trip, which technically has nothing to do with anime... What the hell....I want to slap her mom. Title: Re: The Most Obvious Question... Post by: neoncoyote on March 25, 2008, 05:14:54 PM This sounds a little weird-- but I'm actually not that into anime. I really only watch(or more like re-watch) few anime because I'm sick of the generic stuff like Gurren Lagann, Lucky Star, etc.
Saying that, I'm into stuff with plots that are different from what I've seen before. Take Big O for instance. Besides falling in love with it when I was like... 9, it's much different than what I've watched before. I also enjoy Red Garden oh so very much. It's the series I have spent the most money on buying all the the DVDs, the artbook, mangas, etc. I know GONZO sucks, but I enjoyed it very much. It's like Gantz but with chicks, less aliens, and no head exploding(sadly). True fact, I like anime set in America. It's easier for me to remember the names. :X Red Garden was fun because all the names were American and it took place in New York... and I enjoy stuff set in NY. Other than that; I don't really have an appeal to anime. I've sort of "grown out" of it? Not age-wise, but there was much more interesting things for me to do it seemed. Title: Re: The Most Obvious Question... Post by: R. Daniel 01 on March 25, 2008, 07:12:30 PM Interesting.
Didn't like Gurren Lagann? That could turn into an ugly debate if you're not careful. Watch out! I'll agree that it's rather generic for substance. But as for style, I think Gurren Lagann is the recent champion. How much Gurren Lagann have you watched? Red Garden! I saw a review for that, and it did look interesting. Though I'm a little wary. If a bunch of fashionable Manhattan girls constitute the main cast, it could get... obnoxious. What's your say on that? I think I'm going to like your taste in animé. Exploding heads are great... when used sparingly! Title: Re: The Most Obvious Question... Post by: neoncoyote on March 25, 2008, 07:23:07 PM Yeah, but I can said I tried it at least and didn't judge it like most people. Viral is the only good thing about it though, ohoho. I only watched a few episodes here and there though but I really couldn't get into it. I don't mind people who are into it though! It's not like I'm all OH U SUQ CUZ U LEIK GURREN LAGANN. The show just isn't really my forte.
Red Garden can get a little obnoxious at times actually. There's a few episodes where one of the characters is just a drama queen and complains about OH BAWW I'M DEAD AND I CAN'T GET OVER IT before she actually DOES get over it. Another character is just plain annoying, but she eventually shapes up and stops being a coward. It's more of a drama than SUPER action, but it's still good. Also, the somewhat drag queen lesbian character adds to the effect and the art is really nice too. Yes! I also enjoyed Speed Grapher which also had a nice exploding head effect.
