Title: So, Toonami's dead Post by: Hobo on September 20, 2008, 06:48:59 PM Sometime between 10:30 and 11 PM Eastern, there will be a farewell message.
The last thing broadcast under the Toonami name will be Samurai Jack Episode XXVI: Jack's Sandals. End of an era. Title: Re: So, Toonami's dying tonight. Post by: Professor Vogler on September 20, 2008, 11:20:15 PM My childhood just imploded. Wow. 11 years of Toonami, and it's over.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCAX4cgszCU For as long as it lasts I found the broadcast on YouTube. This sucks, because the revamped relatively recently with the new TOM4.0... According to Wikipedia (which I will soon try to verify this) Anime will now fall under Adult Swim control... which means that Anime on cartoon network is pretty much doomed. "Stay gold............... Bang. Title: Re: So, Toonami's dying tonight. Post by: Brooklyn Luckfield on September 20, 2008, 11:21:29 PM Holy crap, I had no idea. I'm guessing stuff like Naruto is going to adult swim or are they dropping it all together? If they are, it doesn't surprise me.
Title: Re: So, Toonami's dying tonight. Post by: paul1290 on September 21, 2008, 09:01:57 AM I guess it was already on its way out when they stopped showing it every day.
They just brought Samurai Jack back too. :( Title: Re: So, Toonami's dying tonight. Post by: Hobo on September 21, 2008, 03:08:57 PM I just watched through the Intruder, Lockdown, and Trapped in Hyperspace events.
Yay YouTube. Title: Re: So, Toonami's dying tonight. Post by: Professor Vogler on September 21, 2008, 03:52:38 PM I remember re-watching those on YouTube 2 weeks ago. If I remember correctly I think I also helped vote on the new engines for the Absolution when The Intruder was first broadcast.
Also, just bought the Toonami Soundtrack "Deep Space Bass" off of Amazon... because of awesome music. Title: Re: So, Toonami's dying tonight. Post by: Brooklyn Luckfield on September 21, 2008, 06:38:27 PM Quote Anime will now fall under Adult Swim control... which means that Anime on cartoon network is pretty much doomed. I can already see Mike Lazzo gearing any anime that might show up on AS for an abysmal time slot, and bumps that treat their fans like crap. I'm gonna miss Toonami though, I have a ton of good memories. It also helped many-a-fan get interested in anime. Title: Re: So, Toonami's dying tonight. Post by: Bllue on September 21, 2008, 09:46:08 PM I fist watched Big O on toonami... how depressing. I saw a lot of great stuff there, until naruto............ So, is there a good reason?
Title: Re: So, Toonami's dying tonight. Post by: Hobo on September 21, 2008, 10:41:58 PM I'm going to venture it's because the ratings have been bad, plus they probably did market research that suggested that Tom wasn't as "hip" or "cool" as some jibber-jabber for whatever new block they'll have.
I recall that there is/was something called Miguzi, and that there's to be a new block in January or such. I too remember voting on the Absolution's new engines, and playing to save the Absolution from the tractor beam. Title: Re: So, Toonami's dying tonight. No idea why Toonami was canceled.... most likely ratings, but then again instead of pulling it they should just pull out a time machine. Old Formula = Better.I recall that there is/was something called Miguzi, and that there's to be a new block in January or such. Miguzi... Started April 19th 2004 and ran until June 1st 2007. Miguzi (like Toonami) is no more. What shocked me is that Williams Street, the bastards that didn't get Big O a third season and pretty much dislike anime in general WERE IN CHARGE of Toonami and Miguzi. That really makes me ponder schitzophrenia. Title: Re: So, Toonami's dying tonight. I too remember voting on the Absolution's new engines, and playing to save the Absolution from the tractor beam. I have a feeling it might have been rating as well, but honestly with Mike Lazzo and Williams Street in general it could have been any number of reasons. What I don't understand about Mike and WS, is they clearly dislike anime in general, yet still get a few new shows like Moribito and then throw them in ungodly time slots for premiere episodes and wonder why no one is watching. Speaking of rating, I'm glad Bleach keeps pulling in good numbers on Saturdays, came in 1st 2 weeks so far. Quote What shocked me is that Williams Street, the bastards that didn't get Big O a third season I remember that. Big O pulled in 800k to a Million viewers with new episodes premiere and pretty much murdered new episodes of ATHF, pretty much any comedy for that matter, and Mike and WS simply can't have that, so the average DVD sales and "low" rating excuses they pulled, I always called BS on that. Same here, and I can even recall that the design I voted for did not win. The DOKs were one of the coolest and most powerful robots for their size too. A upgradeable beam gun on the right arm, and a projectile launcher on the left. I usually went with the large size mech and medium gun and tanked my way through the game.Damn that was fun. Title: Re: So, Toonami's dead Post by: Hobo on September 22, 2008, 02:51:17 PM Shoot, I can't remember which weapons I used.
Also: Updated topic title. Title: Re: So, Toonami's dead Post by: Char Aznable on September 22, 2008, 03:16:20 PM Ahh!!! Jack was back! I hate working on Saturdays...
Except this past saturday. I ditched work for a concert of 29 bands. lots of local ones, but aside from that, Story of the Year, Ludo, Saving Abel, Apocalyptica, Bullet for My Valentine, Puddle of Mudd (Who autographed my ticket), Shinedown, and Seether. Avenged Sevenfold was supposed to be there, but the lead singer got L...uhh..I can't spell it...Leringitis or however it's spelled *can't find dictionary in messy basement*... ...It was epic. I got an Apocalyptica shirt. Title: Re: So, Toonami's dead Post by: Hal356 on September 22, 2008, 05:18:07 PM I fist watched Big O on toonami... how depressing. I saw a lot of great stuff there, until naruto............ So, is there a good reason? Yeah, I remember that night when I watched the Big O for the first time. The first episode that I saw was The Call from the Past. Good times. Title: Re: So, Toonami's dead Post by: EyeOfPain on September 24, 2008, 05:07:41 AM It's pretty clear that ratings were indeed a factor. I'm sure the lack of focus for the block didn't help either. Maybe the team in charge just felt like Toonami had fulfilled it's original goal, with anime being so popular these days. Would have been awesome to see Moltar try to take back control from Tom and his cronies, though.
Naruto's filler hell will probably continue on the unnamed Friday action block. Title: Re: So, Toonami's dead Post by: Big Money on September 24, 2008, 09:26:13 AM Hell Block is an appropriate term
Also yeah, ideally, in my dream world, Moltar would've shown up, Tom would've regressed into fatTom and he would've hopped up into his chair and flow off into another galaxy to spread love and action cartoons ;_; Title: Re: So, Toonami's dead Post by: Bllue on September 29, 2008, 06:12:45 AM yeah, inever got why they gave tom such an ugly make-over, then handed his job to an assistan droid thingy... hmmm, video game reviews.... i remember those...
I actually like code lyoko, even though you had to be really smart to understand why they didn't start at the begining like normal people... Title: Re: So, Toonami's dead Post by: Brooklyn Luckfield on October 08, 2008, 04:11:47 AM Quote It's pretty clear that ratings were indeed a factor. Yeah, I have a feeling that was the biggest factor, but like you also said, Naruto was in filler hell, so I'm pretty sure that only made things worse. Quote Maybe the team in charge just felt like Toonami had fulfilled it's original goal, with anime being so popular these days. There's no denying that one of the biggest reasons, if not the biggest reason anime got big over in the states and elsewhere was Toonami or similar programs. However Toonami had been going down him since 03 and when Sean Atkins left, that was the final nail in the coffin. I'm hoping Anime will take off again, cause it's fallen by the way side these days for the most part. Title: Re: So, Toonami's dead Post by: Bllue on October 14, 2008, 01:26:03 AM While I am a total anime advocat, the stuff they've been producing lately is mostly fanservs, a whole lot of factory tailord crap that uses what's sold in the past. I'm waiting for the "next big thing"... ack, no, how about the "next GOOD thing"?

I'm waiting for the "next big thing"... ack, no, how about the "next GOOD thing"? I'm totally with you on that. Gundam 00 and Macross Frontier are pretty awesome, and are definitely diamonds in the rough. Title: Re: So, Toonami's dead Post by: Bllue on October 22, 2008, 05:45:48 AM A guy asked me to review animes for his website... @.@ so, if they don't have toonami anymore, what is it? I don't watch t.v. anymore, the internet likes me too much...
Title: Re: So, Toonami's dead Post by: EyeOfPain on October 25, 2008, 09:45:10 PM There's still [adult swim]. SciFi airs anime every Monday night after their wrestling show. IFC has premiers every week, plus a repeat earlier the next week (I think). And Starz will occasionally show something, but they don't really have a set schedule.
Maybe he meant DVDs/fansubs? Title: Re: So, Toonami's dead Post by: neoncoyote on October 26, 2008, 12:54:56 AM Wow, Toonami. I remember my dad and I used to watch it together! I started watching it in 4th grade with my friend Robin. We watched Big O, Gundam Wing and Tenchi and my dad always came home and watched it with me. It brings back really good memories! It was practically my life back then! It's gotten really crappy over the years though, sadly. I'm more sad to have seen the old Toonami I watched go than seeing Toonami in general going. It was good while it lasted.
IFC has premiers every week, plus a repeat earlier the next week (I think). I was surprised to see Speed Grapher on IFC! I watch IFC because, obviously, I love indie movies and fashion documentaries. I was really glad to see it on there though! I watched all of the subbed version last summer and it was interesting to see the dub. I wasn't impressed with it though.Title: Re: So, Toonami's dead Post by: Wazpy on October 26, 2008, 09:09:55 PM I actually watched Toonami even after it got all silly looking. Sure they were pretty loaded down with "what's hot" shows like Naruto and One Piece, but they always whored out. That's nothing new.
Also, they had some stuff there that wasn't just to please the masses. Like Bobobo for example (By the way, I saw Bobobo on TLC the other day O_O... learning my ass). The last show they actually showed was Samurai Jack. I know this because I was watching it and totally not expecting Tom to be like "Well, it was a good 11 years" and fly into space. Anyway, anime fans in general are the ones making sure things like Toonami, Adult Swim's anime block, and SciFi's Animondays fail. They're so elitist. They'll critisize anything that becomes mainstream until it stops being popular, even if they were obsessed a few months ago when it was still "Underground." Not to mention that they download everything and watch it all before the show even gets lisenced in America. There can never be another fun anime craze because so many anime fans just suck the fun out of everything for the people who are new to it. If I like something, I have no doubt a douchebag will ruin it by explaining how corrupted the American dub is or how it's just a mainsteam knockoff of a better series. Title: Re: So, Toonami's dead Post by: Char Aznable on October 29, 2008, 10:35:07 PM You know what I miss? The Midnight Run. Plain and simple.
Title: Re: So, Toonami's dead Post by: Bllue on October 31, 2008, 03:01:23 AM But no, really, if it isn't toonami anymore, is it just regualr CN all saturday evening?
Dang Wazpy, remain incognito for months and just come let it out... I like it! Of course, my going incognito might be welcome... But still, I hate how every thing you typed is absolutely true. Hey, where's a good site to watch anime, anyway? |
