Title: New Stargate Post by: R. Daniel 01 on October 02, 2009, 04:21:48 PM The first series tried to be a space opera, but was as a cheesy mess with a faux Emperor Palpatine. "Stargate: Atlantis" sounds limited and similarly cheesy; didn't even try watching that.
The new one looks more like hard sci-fi, perhaps with some human drama. Probably taking the drama cue from Galactica. This one could possibly be good, but it's still hard to care. Title: Re: New Stargate Post by: Brooklyn Luckfield on October 02, 2009, 05:00:38 PM I liked the first two Stargates, even if they where a tad cheesy. The new one looks pretty cool. I also see Lou Diamond Phillips is got a leading role in a non sci-fi original deal as well.
Title: Re: New Stargate Post by: Hobo on October 04, 2009, 01:12:13 PM I really liked SG1 for a long time, but then the timeslot kept me from keeping up.
Never really got into Atlantis, and haven't heard anything else about this one yet, but I'm interested. Title: Re: New Stargate Post by: Professor Vogler on October 04, 2009, 11:41:11 PM SG1 was brilliant and amazing. Absolutely loved it even towards the end.
Stargate Atlantis I liked less-so. It didn't have the thrill that the first had nor the real character development and depth of the SG1 team. SGU.... I dunno, I missed the first episode. But it would take quite a lot to live up to SG1's awesomeness. Title: Re: New Stargate Post by: paul1290 on October 06, 2009, 12:40:39 AM I liked Stargete SG-1 a lot.
I have to agree with Vogler and Hobo though. Stargate Atlantis wasn't that great, though I think that might have more to do with SG-1 being hard to beat than Atlantis having anything wrong with it. (Vogler your new avatar kicks ass) Title: Re: New Stargate Post by: EyeOfPain on October 08, 2009, 03:58:03 PM I'll cosine pretty much everything here.
The first ep definitely had a Galactica feel to it, but not in a bad way. It's taking the franchise in a very different direction, and is probably closer to the original film than either previous television series. Who does Phillips play, by the way? Title: Re: New Stargate Post by: R. Daniel 01 on October 10, 2009, 12:37:57 PM I missed all the airings of the first episode, but I caught the second.
I thought the flashbacks with the expedition leader dragged on for too long. Time from those flashbacks could have gone towards explaining the various political conflicts, which were mentioned but unexplained. So, I felt confused whenever the story jumped back to the ship. I'm surprised by how unfinished the gate-room looks. Since they're on some kind of deluxe ship, I thought it would be huge and richly furnished for fancy receptions. Instead, it was all small and dank, and I don't think better lighting would change that. Title: Re: New Stargate Post by: paul1290 on October 11, 2009, 06:34:17 PM Darn, didn't have a working television available until today. Hope I didn't miss too much.

Instead, it was all small and dank, and I don't think better lighting would change that. Well, it's an expeditionary ship. Why would it need a lavish gate room? And most of the politics continue directly from Atlantis, so they may not have expected too many who skipped that show to come back for Universe. Thought it was great how they finally get around to some character introductions in the third week. :D Title: Re: New Stargate Post by: R. Daniel 01 on October 23, 2009, 08:50:54 PM Well, it's an expeditionary ship. Oh, okay. I missed that from the first episode.Quote Thought it was great how they finally get around to some character introductions in the third week. You mean they didn't cover that in the first episode? Christian Boy and Hot Senator's Daughter seem to be having these interminable PG-sex sequences. And those web-cam style "we're all going to die; this is my final farewell" confessionals--are they actually entertaining? I always change the channel when they come on. It astounds me how little patience I have for this, considering all the slow-paced things I've enjoyed. The expedition lottery could have been exploited much better for drama. Having the token Asian woman debate with the captain in private is not enough. Title: Re: New Stargate Post by: EyeOfPain on October 30, 2009, 12:46:04 PM Well, they did, but I was talking about the webcam stuff, "My name is . . ., here's my distinguishing character trait."
I kinda liked how the lottery was low key, you expected a riot, and not getting one was more surprising. I thought figured that one guy would still make trouble, though. |
