I've now seen Paprika, Satoshi Kon's latest movie. It's a bit overwhelming. Anyone else seen it and want to discuss it?

She can do it that way if she wants.

Hi Pygmalion! Been a while. I'll have to look this up, seeing as how I'm a big fan of Paranoia Agent.

My standards for this movie are ridiculously high, there is no way it's going to be able to live up to my expectations.

What IS the movie? I've heard of the spice (I use it sometimes, in fact), but this movie has eluded my knowledge.

In a time very much like the present, a team of Japanese researchers have developed a device, the DC-Mini, which allows an observer to enter another's dreams. This is hailed as a breakthrough in psychotherapy, but when the device is stolen, it turns out that the one wearing it can force dreams onto another, even if he is awake. To save their project, the team try to find it.

As you would expect from the director of Millenium Actress and Paranoia Agent, an important part of the movie is the blurring of boundaries between waking, dreams and madness. Madhouse, the production company, does an excellent job with the animation.

The trailer of this involves (from what I inferred) involves some sort of synchronized suicide by japanese businessmen, and at one point someone busts out rocket launchers to combat giant floats or something.

Looks interesting, if anything

Edit: It appears the japanese trailer is alot more sinister than the american one.

It's the name of the main character's alter-ego she uses to dive into people's dreams with.  :P

Has everybody seen it now?

I thought it was good. The art was... well you know what to expect. It's a shame to ever take your eyes off the visuals in order to read the subtitles!

At first, the plot was a little too subtle for me. I think that's what the problem was. You know how in some anime, you're left wondering just what is going on? But a couple of twists in relationships and plot help compensate for that.

Overall, though, I rarely felt completely entranced, like I did after watching GitS: Innocence, for example. Maybe because most of the action takes place in dreams, and was often cutesy, it didn't strike me as "really there." Also, some of the characters are extreme caricatures.

I loved Paranoia Agent but I felt like this was just treading the same ground.

Kon's directorial work does seem to have some very similar themes, but they don't feel nearly as recycled as the latest film from Hayao Miyazaki.

Only watched Paprika once so far (with subs; doesn't it have an English dub?), but I did like it.

That's a good point.

Oddly enough... I think it doesn't.

No! Don't do that! Evil! I'm guilty of watching TV-anime on YouTube, but as for the movies that come out much less often, always rent! C'mon, considering you live in Cali, there've gotta be plenty of nearby video stores that stock Paprika.

And really, Bllue. I don't see how you could enjoy such a beautifully animated film on YouTube. That's just... rude! :D

You silly duck, it does (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0851578/)! I've seen some of the dubbed clips on youtube but not a lot to really say anything about it.

People report so often about how they forgo English dubs, it skewed my memory.
