Title: Brilliance!
Post by: Ace of Spades on July 23, 2010, 02:32:33 AM
Hello, it's me Uncle Breezybum. This idea occurred to me in some idle chit-chat with the great Pimp Char. With Toonami being dead and CN going the MTV route. I PROPOSE THAT TOONAMI BE REVIVED AS AN ENTIRE CHANNEL! Showing the best action cartoons along with the old and new school anime from the old days and what adult swim has forgotten about. WHO ELSE THINKS THIS IS A GOOD IDEA!?

That's what Funimation should be. Instead of the Loli channel.

All aboard the Awesome Train! Woo wooo!

What titles would it include? My contribution is Venus Wars.

I was thinking of the good old stuff I.E. Case Closed, Outlaw Star, Big-O, and any of the gundam series. Then at Midnight show the mature stuff such as Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Yu Yu Hakusho uncut, and all the other favorites that Adult Swim has long since forsaken. ANY MORE IDEAS LADIES?!

Excellent idea Ace.

My contribution? Gungrave. Gungrave is a show that had sooooo much potential to be huge over here if shown at the right time and advertised right. It's from the creator of Trigun, the animation is very nice, and it's got plenty of stylish fighting and violence and on top of that the story is actually good.

One of the many things Toonami did right was advertising and putting together commercials that made you wanna watch the show.

I definitely think Gurren Lagann would be on a Toonami channel ;D

Without a doubt. I still rewatch some of those clip-commercials on youtube because they are so awesome. One of their greatest one's being for Outlaw Star.

If there were to be a revival of Toonami with its own network, the only way it would work is if it had the same atmosphere as the original. That calls for a return of TOM 2.0, S.A.R.A., and the Absolution as well as all the awesome music and attitude.

I agree with those.
But at least add old school DBZ. And Dragon Ball for that matter. I grew up with all those awesome TV shows.
Maybe add GITS too, and a bunch of other old school favs, Knights of the Zodiac, Candidate for the Goddess, Dual!. Plus some newer stuff, King Gainer, IGPX, transformers and Crest/Banner for the stars.

Fixed some spelling errors for you.

I would love to rewatch DBZ in 1/4th the time! That's an awesome idea Yuko ;D

And I fixed some of Evan's spelling errors.  ;D

In lieu of a new Toonami channel, I passed out in the conversation before getting to this point, but also a Mecha channel. All Gundam series, Transformers, Beast Wars, Big-O, Giant Robo, Dual! PTA, Rahxephon, Voltron, Zoids, Battletech, stuff like that...

Title: Re: Brilliance!
Post by: Yuko-san on July 24, 2010, 04:38:11 PM
Battle tech had a TV series?
Holy Carp! I must watch it.

But yeah, a Mecha channel would be freakin awesome.

Title: Re: Brilliance!
Post by: Char Aznable on July 24, 2010, 04:45:50 PM
It's early 90s bad, and the show's idea of a Summoner looks a helluva lot like a Sunder...the chassis are nothing alike from each other, and that's a 15 ton difference!

On that subject, some friends of mine are restarting his dad's old Battletech company (that I currently forgot the name of) and making a tabletop Roleplay game for Battletech that involves character classes, rewards and consequences, and the like. Fully detailed and everything.

And while I do own the series and both games, I concur on Gungrave.

Char, ditto on Zoids. I loved Chaotic Century.

Title: Re: Brilliance!
Post by: Yuko-san on July 25, 2010, 12:10:08 AM
yes. Zoids was awesome. Did Bandai ever release Genesis in English? I've only ever found it in Japanese, and want to know what it would be like in English.

Anyway, whoever makes a Toonami channel needs to add the 1980's animated Star Trek to the line up. It embodies everything that Led up to the original Tom and Chim, the original Toonami hosts. Plus it wasn't that bad an animated remake. It had all the original actors playing their animated counter parts.

1980's animated Star Trek to the line up

'70s, but yeah those were neat

What was cool about those is I've heard a few of them were concepts the writers had for the original show, but it was too expensive to do the effects, so they got reused for the animated series

edit: Wait now that I read the rest of this thread (aside from "Oh cool somebody else saw the star trek animated series"), CN did try a network that was the old cartoons that were owned by the parent company, it was called boomerang and failed. I realize this is not what the thread was about, but it is an example of why that'd bomb

Niche channels always try to mainstream themsevles, frequently in idiotic ways. The sci-fi channel didnt show a 4th of july twilight zone marathon this year, thats the madness that exists..if they cancel the new years marathon my childhood will totally be dead (Some channel I got in Jersey..I think wpix would air marathons of it, then the sci fi channel did them)

They finally canned Boomerang eh?

I think Hasbro and Bandai dropped Zoids cold turkey after the toys stopped selling.

I think Boomerang is still on the air actually...I'd have to look at my TV...or ask my friend...he watches it all the time...

...I had a Sleeper Zoid builder before I even knew what Zoids was...wish I still had it...I'm now down to a Hel-Digunner and my Liger Zero Jaeger.

Edit: I made this post at 04:00:00...I coulnd't do that again if I tried.

*Walks in using buttocks* Well ladies, it seems that I have begun to start the process of creating a web based toonami via my Youtube account. I HAVE COLLECTED MOST OF THE DEBUTED GUNDAM SERIES. plus some various others. NOW TO JUST FIND A WAY TO RECREATE THE AWESOME BUMPS WITH TOM AND S.A.R.A!

Nope, I still have the channel.

Also, no Gundam SD for mecha channel!! >=o

Ace, you should provide a link or something. Or PM it.

Totally slipped my mind. If they put Escaflowne on after school or prime time, and slap a TV PG rating on it, it could do ok. The show has really nothing objectionable outside of some blood and very, very minor swearing in the later episodes.

Title: Re: Brilliance!
Post by: Char Aznable on July 27, 2010, 02:43:07 AM
For a moment, I pondered:

"what channel would Escaflowne fall under?"
"Well technically those aren't Mecha. They're Dragon Armors."
"Yeah, but I'm sure that most people aren't that technical."
"But you're one of the ones that are."
"Which brings me back to the question of what channel. Do mecha have to be metal, and you know...Dragon Armors kinda operate like mecha..."

Title: Re: Brilliance!
Post by: Brooklyn Luckfield on July 27, 2010, 04:23:01 AM
Dragon Armor? Is that what Guymelefs are called in the movie? It also sounds like they are more than mere machines as well.

I've never seen the movie personally. I do watch the TV series regularly though, although, I can see Esca being a tough sell to the mainstream American market.

Oh hell, Someone get Heroman the hell over here.

Title: Re: Brilliance!
Post by: R. Daniel 01 on July 30, 2010, 06:43:52 PM
What does it matter whether they're powered by Dragon Stones or a micro-fusion reactor? They're all enormous, mechanical suits of armor. That's enough to be mecha in my book.

I think the movie was enjoyable, but you have to put your brain on hold and just feel the EMOTION. Escaflowne Movie was geared towards 16 year old girls.

I only last week found out about what became of Cartoon Network -- or, should I say, "Malformed Bastard Child of AMC, TDC and LSD Network".

I had to check TV Guide something like six hours in advance to even find a fricking cartoon.

I guess 4kids is offering the best Saturday morning cartoon block on earth right now. Which I totally intend to watch tomorrow. Even TMNT: Back to the damn-fool Sewers. Which is slightly less awful than TMNT: Forever purports to be.

This said, every modern rendition of TMNT is enough to make the Shredder impale himself on his claws in shame.

"OMG! Master Splinter is stuck in the Intarnetz! We must dress up in anachronistic Net Suitz and save him from AdAware!"

"HAHA! 9999 Meg connection PWNZ J00!"

...bleagh.

Title: Re: Brilliance!
Post by: Brooklyn Luckfield on July 31, 2010, 12:14:49 AM
Yeah, in some sort of ironic twist, it's now 4Kids that has the better Saturday morning cartoon block oddly enough.

Title: Re: Brilliance!
Post by: Yuko-san on July 31, 2010, 01:09:14 AM
I miss good old cartoons. i grew up on Dexter's Lab, Tom and Jerry, Powerpuff girls, Pokemon, Disney (the 90's Disney where Rob what's his last name could play a multi-gendered Genie in an Aladdin movie and no on thought it was wrong), Dragon Ball, Z, Buu saga, Yu-Gi-Oh, Digimon, and of course Big O.

Yeah. I miss those.

Title: Re: Brilliance!
Post by: Randolf on July 31, 2010, 11:36:08 AM
Well, in another ironic twist, I actually missed the whole damn 4kids block by sleeping late.

The thing that surprised me was that I actually slept last night.

I miss the good old cartoons, too. I've always liked DBZ because it requires virtually no thought, and that's relaxing. Dexter's Lab was way cool all the way up to the switch to digitally-painted cels, whereabout some kind of bizarre transformation took place where nothing Dexter did mattered anymore, nor was funny.

Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh used to rule my shagging universe.

And Big O Season I is victory. High-quality hand-painted cels animation FTW.

Post by: Char Aznable on August 01, 2010, 02:21:01 AM
I hope that list wasn't good old cartoons, because I watched Voltron, G-force, Speed Racer, the original TMNT, GI Joe, Captain Planet, Reboot, Transformers, and School House Rock. I watched them every Saturday morning with my parents.

Check back Wednesday next week for my declaration here.
