City of Amnesia

Of course there are more genres in anime. Then it splits up into age demographics, shojo, shounen, seinen. Genres split into sub-genres, Harem's, Maho shounen, so on, and so forth. Anime has become so expansive that the genres in the poll no longer cover most anime today, since almost all anime covers more than one genre. But, with all that aside, which genre do you prefer to watch and get more enjoyability.

The poll is very limited, feel free to specify in your post.

I prefer anything but harem style anime. I try to avoid fantasy titles as well.

I voted for drama (it was too late, I didn't see that you can vote for two there) and that's what attracts me just about all the anime I watch. I probably would have voted for action and adventure too, but like I said, if there's no drama then I'm not really that interested in it.

I put action/mecha/scifi. Although drama is good too.
I personally prefer war story anime, or things like Hellsing, GITS, and such.
Comedy is good too but a lot of the jokes, like in Excel Saga, go over your head if you're not Japanese.

Don't make me pick, damn you. Hell, I'll even watch the occasional Shoujo anime, and I love Dragon Ball Z! But, yeah, Urotsukidoji and Inju Gakuen were good anime as well, so Ecchi/Hentai... Damn it. I can't choose one or two.

I always liked the whole Action/Adventure and Drama combo, it appears in a lot of animes I watch, despite that, I can only pick one of them as my choice. So I went with Action/Adventure, I am more of action man myself, those crazy fight scenes, lots of things going on at once, just showing the full potential of what your favorite character can do. Maybe its me, I feel like I am one of those violent old dinosaurs that Mel Gibson once the described on the Simpsons when referring to a certain kind of movie-goer... oh well. Well, that's all I have to say about this.

Damn it, fine. All right, well... Since I am what I am.. I have to pick Action Adventure first. I mean, Dragon Ball Z has been one of my favourite anime for well over a decade! Let's see... Not sure what to pick for the second one, so I'll go with Fantasy since Lodoss War is likewise awesome.

I have to agree with you Nine, Casablanca is full of win.

Both are great, but I honestly preferred The Maltese Falcon. But I love mystery movies and stuff like that, so I guess that's part of it. Casablanca was amazing, though.

If i had to really choose i would say it's sci-fi to a more higher degree than dramatic.

I've ne'er actually seen the Maltese Falcon.

Casablanca was awesome though, and I had fully expected to hate it.

Back on the subject at hand. Sci-Fi/Mecha/Action that you're going to get from most people here. I like to dabble in horror. Mostly though I like any anime that either makes me think or makes me laugh. That or has awesome enough fight scenes as to make me forget that I'm not doing either of the previous two.

Ghost in the Shell is definetly science-fiction. The series if anything is more dramatic and even more philosophical then the original movie was.

Escaflowne is the only fantasy-animé I've seen that's worth a watch. Can somebody point me towards another?

It seems to me that all the animés I like tend to mix three or more of the above genres. Maybe a story is like a character. If it's flat, if it's got only one possible genre plunked in there, then it's probably not gonna stimulate my brain as much.

Seriously though, the only anime which has ever actually managed to make me emotional in that was was the Grave of Fireflies. Which was truly awesome, but it's been the only one. Animation and drawing has the ability to play mood via visuals in a much more expanded way than even film can, but 99.9% of anime I've seen barely touches on the possibility of expressing depressing things in that way. The majority of japanese animation is bright colors and wild, wacky adventure. The attempts at tragedy tend to come off as either melodramatic (See Evangelion), or underdeveloped in comparison to the rest of the plot (can't think of anything off the top of my head). So basically the answer is that since genre/style is almost nonexistent, it didn't even occur to me to include it. Or perhaps I'm just ignorant of an entire subset of anime.

Either or really.

Eureka 7 did pretty well at the emotional stuff, especially as it relates to family and warfare... Robotech, was good at making you feel loss and despair from the characters' side.

I was trying too much for the little details (comedy, romance, action/adventure) that I forgot to pick the category. I like Sci-Fi more than Fantasy movies/series, but unlike with Fantasy, I have an almost total like it/hate it attitude toward all Science Fiction works. There's very few gray area's in Sci-Fi for me.

Ne, R. Daniel Olk 01, Ceres is really good, but the voice actress for Aya is THE WORST ONE I HAVE EVER HEARD!!!! Find it in japanese. It's fanatasy and romance.

The only really good fantasy anime I can really think of is Record of the Lodoss War, but I haven't seen much of it myself. Still, I hear it's excellent.

You like Kanon and Air? Check out Saikano and Rumbling Hearts. They will "make you cry" Especially Saikno. Oh yes, especially Saikano.

I love watching the Girl Power ones they have on demand... sucha clever sub-genre...

Well, there's Urotsukidoji: Legend of Overfiend, Bible Black, and La Blue Girl for the obvious and famous ones. Then you have others like Viper GTS, Shusaku the Letch, Black Gate... A newer trend in hentai is porn that tells a story. Hentai with decent animation, good voice actors, a reasonably well written plot... The show could be aired on a primetime cable network, were it not for the inclusion of hardcore sex scenes. This is an interesting tactic. With being straight to vid, a lot of hentai anime has a higher budget per episode than a normal TV show, which is why so many hentai OAV's look so good.
