Title: Philo Farnsworth's astounding picture-radio (The t.v. thread)
Post by: Sharpshooter005 on January 23, 2010, 04:28:32 PM
Essentially this is like the "what movie did you watch" thread, but with t.v./general discussion of teevee programming/where you pick a network executive and just post 2 paragraph long slanderous assaults on their intellect and character.

Currently nothing. But I'm going to give you, yes all both of you reading, an EXCLUSIVE postmortem of the 'late night wars' (because in my home thread on this crap I think I've picked that carcass dry and discussed it to a level nobody would ever, ever care about. I need to get a hobby outside of applying my history major skills to network bungles.)

-Leno, and I know the internet wants his head on a pike but I personally just can't muster up that level of vitriol here, is gonna probably be just fine. There will be no backlash, or internet conan-fan led partisan warfare, people will not cancel appearing on his show.

-Conan, and I am going to go with the prevailing wisdom here so feel free to scream "bandwagon", could very likely end up on FOX. Fox will likely try again to make themselves a late night t.v. player, something they abandoned since The Chevy Chase show became the talk-show equivilent of the hindenburg. Will it work? I guarantee you it wouldn't be as bad as the chevy chase show, if for no other reason than the press they'd get from "We hired Conan" would stir up interest by itself. Also Conan O'Brien knows how to make a not-awful late night show

-If Conan appears on SNL in the 7 months he's "not allowed to host a show", it wouldn't stun me. If this somehow violates his pseudo no-compete agreement, I can easily still see it occuring sometime

-Conan's last show was the most dignified, professional send off to a job he clearly adored. And, dare I say, just sort of a class act all around.

-Letterman is still the best, also if you haven't checked out Craig Ferguson's show I advise it highly. (This is apropos of almost nothing, but its correct)

-Jeff Zucker, CEO of NBC, is a doomed man. If the comcast buyout of NBC Universal goes through I am practically willing to bet money that their first act of business is going to be giving him the axe. He and NBC are essentially a punchline now. It's just been one thing after another, generally nobody including me can name a network CEO, but this guys screwed up so much he's known (at least among..intratube cognoscenti, but still). Does not bode well

-Think this, or even the letterman v leno thing was the first time NBC had a total quagmire involving late night programming? Yeah..nope, same song but they changed the tempo a bit http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2010/01/late-night-.html (http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2010/01/late-night-.html) (this is a pretty good article, fyi, or I liked it anyway).

Conan was great. He was funnier at 12:30 though, you could tell that his corporate overlords made him drop the goofy characters and stuff to try and keep Jay's demographic.

Also I noticed that the entire audience last night for Conan was 20-30 years old.

Yes, Craig Ferguson is one hysterical Scotsman. I absolutely love his show. I was never that into Letterman because the top ten is usually dismally unfunny.

D'oh, I forgot this (clips were shown on various late night shows but heres the whole thing)

Some of you may remember the Taiwanese news doing an insane CGI recreation of the Tiger Woods scandal

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULB29qLs1f0 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJ9m1an-pQ8) They topped the hell out of themselves when it came to this..

I swear I do not want this to just turn into a wake for conan's tonight show, but this is just...wow, just wow

Quote

Masturbating bear seriously was never that funny.

Now, Pimpbot5000 on the other hand..

Quote
Yes, Craig Ferguson is one hysterical Scotsman.

One hysterical American. He went through the citizenship process, and loves the country so much he has the "Join or die" political cartoon tatooed on his arm. But yes he is scottish, and being part scottish it just makes me like him more.

(One time he had a British actress on, and he said "I like British women..when I'm lucky I can do to them what England did to Scotland". Half the audience was "OHHHHH SHIT" and half was seemingly baffled at the joke. I as a viewer lol'd..if you don't get the joke, he means fucking them)

I love Craig's assortment of puppet characters.

Especially the cam. Which he then drew a beard on. That's probably why he only used the clam once.

I tried watching that one Comedy Central show, Important Stuff with, oh hell I forget his name. Trying to figure how he's funny and why he merits a show. I've also been watching Tosh.0 cause I'm a fan of Mr. Tosh, and the Interwebz videos are also a plus.

What? The mental image I got from that was Darth Vader playing chess with Yoda.
Do you have a link to explain what that is?

That show is great! It seemed like it would be a stupid premise, but the guys that run the store are hilarious. So are the people who bring stuff in. Some of them should be committed. Like the guy who brought in a sword that he made. Out of glass.

Demitri Martin is awful. He was the weakest part of the daily show when he was on there.

Tosh.0 on the other hand I like. Probably since I generally don't follow the entire 'youtube scene' as it were (ever read the comment sections on there? It's enough to make you pray for your modem to suddenly combust) so most of the stuff isn't played out for me

I moslty use youtube for music videos, or things blowing up, or rally cars flying through the air and hitting things.

And yeah. Ignore the comments section entirely if you wish to keep your sanity. It's almost as bad as 4chan.

Indeed. I think I gave up on Important stuff when one of his jokes was talking about running a marathon but doing so running in a stereotypical manner. Grade A comedy, amirite?

I also try an watch Red Eye when ever I get the chance.

Deadliest Warrior season 2. Still providing mindless, goofball fun, even if the "science" behind it is rage inducing.

The season finale of Human Target was BAD-ASS. This is one of my favorite things on TV right now.

I'm still waiting for Lost to wrap up so I can watch the whole season in one shot on Hulu. Having to wait a week for the new episode always makes me forget everything that happened on the last episode.

Yeah, Lost definitely goes slower when you're watching it week after week, but marathoning it, things tie together more and you're all "oooh yeah!"  I still currently watch it every Tuesday, but it's hard to remember what happened (even with the good filler episodes).  Especially with this entire thing about Jacob and MIB, you have to keep a close watch on literally everything.

Caught it last night. GSG9 vs. SWAT.

Americans win... narrowly. In some cases, we simply had better gear. Also, being a SWAT officer sounds more rigorous. And wow, I couldn't even tell those instructors were German. They had almost no accent whatsoever.

I'm curious to see how the hell they plan on simulating a battle between Attila and Alexander next week. Seems fishy.

I don't think they where German at all. Most of the match ups are one sided or suffer from so many stereotypes it makes a Warrior look bad. Case in point was the Viking v.s Samurai episode. Viking lost because his gear was used the wrong way and was portrayed poorly. Throwing two hand held spear =WTF, using a fake Viking Shield = WTF. An actual Viking shield is light, durable and not strapped to you damn arm and is design to break apart but still be used effectively. Also using a Canadian comedian, who came from England and happens to be Japanese is face palm worthy. I'm not expecting much from the Attila v.s Alex one, I know it's gonna be one sided. They have also managed to screw up the Aztec Jaguar Knight as well i.e he is not wearing his trademark armor, helmet and his shield.

Deadliest warrior is hilarious

I like how now they have the dummies loaded with fake blood that just sprays out

Ballistic gel torsos on robot carts driving around getting shot is just entertaining. It's like battlebots except taken seriously, and with firearms.

Seems fishy.

Fishy? Did you see the "IRA vs Spetsnaz" special they aired before the premire. They had a dude who was (at least SUPPOSEDLY) ex-Spetsnaz versus a guy who was a historian and was somehow related to Michael Collins.

So all the weapons tests were basically "Ex-military versus a historian whos relative was a revolutionary, whos a better shot". This shits in no way accurate, it's just fun to watch. The mock-battles are hilariously brutal

And if you're taking this seriously. 1) The GSG9 should have squared off with the FBI Hostage Rescue Team since thats the closest U.S. analogue. 2) When they did the sniper rifle test, apparently the GSG9 uses a different rifle than was shown

oh totally. Skoti Collins is actually a bit part actor, in fact most of "experts" are indeed actors. Like the Samurai expert, Tetsuro Shigamatsu, is actually a Canadian comedian, actor, and radio show host. Hell, even Sala Baker makes an appearance, aka the guy who did Sauron's voice in Lord of the Rings.

*Ballistic gel torsos on moterized scooters start rolling around*

I fucking lol'd, it's a fun show.

The "ZEN ARCHER" guy in the Ninja vs Spartan episode?

If the Spetsnaz dudes an actor, thats fine cause in the "Spetsnaz versus green berets" episode or whatever, when they test the grenade he drops it into the target they use, then walks off and lights a cigarette as it explodes

The hell with authenticity, that was just zany

The Spetsnaz guy is def. an actor.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm3398053/ (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm3398053/)

Here's Tetsuro Shigimatsu's stuff

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetsuro_Shigematsu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetsuro_Shigematsu)

He's the dude from Viking v.s Samurai. He studied dance in Japan for two years, so I guess that's his martial arts background in a nut shell.

The usual scene with the gel torso is like this more often than not:

Geoff: "Start the robot."
*Robot starts towards the target and is stabbed, shot, or something and is totally destoryed.*
Geoff: Holy shit! Did you see that? That was fucking crazy!"
*Armand checks the torso8
Armand:This guys dead.

The Ninja experts where voice actors/actors.

The Shaka Zulu v.s William Wallace episode is a riot as well.

On a better note, The Doctor's been back for two months now. I don't think I like Smith as much as either Tennant or Eccleston, but of course, none of the compare to Hartnell, Troughton or Pertwee.

I have never seen a single episode of lost. The island or whatever wound up being purgatory right? Thats what I assumed from what I've heard about the show.

I'm just glad the internets going insane over that now, and finally I won't have to hear people spergin out over the battlestar galactica finale (which I seriously don't see the problem with)

There was one part where it seemed like they went back in time and prevented the plane from crashing. It turned out THAT one was purgatory, or something. All the stuff that happened on the island actually did happen.

Of course, they didn't answer ANY of the big questions that had been running all along. Bastards.

For those wondering what I meant, if you have watched Evangelion or anything by the guy that made it, then you know how bad the endings are.

Anyway...
Reruns of Star Trek the Next Generation. I find the antics of a drunk Data rather amusing. It's episode 6 of the first season.

They also keep killing off characters and maiming others.

eh, maybe. I finished it and started season 2.

And wtf is adventure time? I saw a promo for it when watching youtube (stupid google suggest). All I got was talking dog and kid wearing a cat hat, with possible cat ears.

Started watching the second season of Zoids Genesis. I have no idea why, but kids under 14 piloting giant robots just makes me a little disturbed. To fight in a war before hitting puberty seems wrong, but at the same time no pesky hormones to make you act crazy.

yep, that's adventure time. A typical episode involves the two leads saying they are going to go on an adventure or something heroic, then wacky jokes and slap stick humor ensues. It's not a bad show, but it's nothing special honesty.

I also need to do watching Deadliest Warrior. That show continues to push arm chair historians and heavily flawed test as fact. I.E saying warriors used Butted Chainmail (cheap hollywood and the kind the "living historian" use).

I think I've seen part of the first, most of the second, and some of the third season, of Dexter. Pretty awesome. I watched a couple episodes from this latest season with John Lithgow. I like the show, but never seen it all from the beginning.

Didn't know it started as a novel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darkly_Dreaming_Dexter).

Dexter is that serial killer show right?

Anyway, I tried to watch my Japanese Big O DvD on my computer using windows media player. For some reason I had the bright idea to click the little menu icon and choose to let windows media player attempt to translate the DvD's audio into English subtitles instead of using the already properly translated subtitles from the DvD's main menu.

This became mildly entertaining. I didn't actually watch it, I skipped around a bit. Dorothy became Tusoila, Roger became Natoriler and Norman was Nashin. I skipped to the part where Roger wakes up after fainting in Episode 4. And here is what Dorothy and Roger ended up saying.
Roger" Tusoila being do what?"
Dorothy" mum? your mum is here?"
Rogoer" It means nothing to do with you"
Dorothy "He response is normalish"
----

The moral of the story is never left windows media player translate anything. I ended up popping my English DvD in and watched it instead. It made more sense.
