Title: What Other Forums Do You Go To?
Post by: Randolf on August 26, 2010, 07:12:33 PM
I re-discovered one of my threads from the old PCF while browsing the archives, and found this topic to be one of my most popular. So, here goes trying it again.

For myself: Besides CoA, I'm a regular at the BlenderArtists boards. I was a frequent poster, but have since settled into lurking until I have something significant to post in the way of new art.

Presently, that's it for me. Now, your turn.

There is no cabalcon, and I do not visit it.

One of these is true, and even then that truth isn't all true.

vwvortex, and sometimes the Bioware forums. I haven't really gone to the Bioware ones recently since I finished the hell out of Dragon Age and Mass Effect.

Mainly the Adult Swim Message Boards, where I spend most of my time there lurking the Other Anime folder. Other than that, pretty much just AnimeOnDVD (now mania.com/aodvb), but I'm not a huge poster there either.

I'd like to find some other forum that's relevant to my interests, but I'm still looking.

Outside of CoA, I don't really go to that many forums. I just lurk around the usual sights Anime News Network and what not. I do however visit No Mutants Allowed pretty frequently, and contrary to the Bethesda Fan Boys usual BS about them hating EVERYTHING about FO3, I've noticed none of that. In fact Brother None cracks down on mindless bashing. I guess the BFB's just take any dissenting option as "bashing". The only "bashing" I've seen are legit critisim against Bethsoft shitty writing, ass-tastic animations, and voice acting recorded by 3rd rate hacks they found off the street.

um,
Neo/uni/meta pet forums
TPPC rpg, tpm rpg and weedles secret garden forums.
Robot japan
the anime forums
/m/ in 4chan (I just troll)
unseen 64
and a hentai forum. At least I admit it.

This is the one I visit the most though.

Oh man which Hentai Forum? There's one place called Hongfire, which is huge and has people from all over the globe posting on it. (I particularly enjoyed a thread entitled, What do you dislike about your own country?) There is an entire subforum devoted to Foreign Language Discussion.

For some reason, I can't really bring myself to really commit to another place. Randolf was mentioning how he deactivates sigs to make the forum look neater, but really, this place is rather ideal. It seems that most other big names are either visual vomit or pretty like a prison cell.

Also, whereas these Big O forums usually have meaningful posts, there's a lot of mindless blabber to wade through.

That said, I'm maybe making a shift towards Nihonmaru. It looks legit to me because there is an Escaflowne discussion occurring, because they've put a call out for scripters and programmers (they want to do things themselves and associate with people who have their shit together), have a donation service running, and though they have ads, said ads are not for J-list porno stuff. The only downside is a pervading kawaii.

Damn it, Dan, I've been waiting for a good meaty post like this for three days. :P

As I said about sigs, it's purely a cosmetic nitpick of mine. I'm only interested in the actual text of the posts, with as little excess as possible. I have no actual complaint about the look of the place (although it is a little bland sometimes).

I'm leery of seeking out new forums, as finding a decent place is hard as all hell. I want a place like this-- just like CoA-- only, y'know, a bit more active.

I'll give you that the discussion around here isn't what it used to be; as for mindless blabber, something has to fill the void left by the lack of new episodes or new ideas. Besides, even if there were new episodes of Big O on every week, we'd still be yammering about whatever nonsense we've come across in our wayward travels through the internet; that's just how it works.

But if you've got a good theory for a serious Big O discussion, Daniel, just throw it out there and I'll bite. If it comes down to just you and me going back and forth about the vagaries of Memories and Tomatoes and Megadeuses, so be it.

And trust me, you can do worse than kawaii. On the anime side of the internet, you can do a damn sight worse than kawaii.

EDIT: I am currently visiting the RPGnet forums, but have not registered there. I have yet to pick up on their reputation, however. Perhaps one of you can advise me before I get in too deep.

I dunno, dude. I just made my intro post over there. It took me almost and hour. I'm feeling pretty serious about this new relationship... it's giving me the fluttery butterflies that I haven't felt in... oh, years upon years. SIIIIGH!

F'reals. Check it out yourself.

Is RPGnet for RPGmaker? Or for RPGs in general?

Title: Re: What Other Forums Do You Go To?

RPGs in general (tabletop, MMO, etc.). They also literally have almost 100 times the daily members CoA gets, so I may enjoy diving into that noxious purple fray (seriously, there's like almost 800 people on there right now; the online list fills the whole damn page).

Being that I'm taking such in interest in RPGs, I'm seriously thinking about getting involved there.

Also at RPGnet:
Let's Play: Limbo of the Lost (http://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?t=400406)
Make sure you're not eating or drinking while reading this thread. For various reasons.

EDIT: Yours has 2100+ online. Damn, man.

Can you find my post? I'm calling myself Thermolysis.

Not a random name!

I see. If it's for RPGs in general, then that sounds like a good choice.

Limbo of the Lost reminds me of the fake game that Something Awful produced for last years' April Fools. Now THAT was gold. Limbo needs some gameplay videos with commentary.

Read your post at Nihonmaru. Alas, I have to agree with your assessment of City of Amnesia. It's been wickedly quiet lately. I think we went virtually postless over the weekend. I want to believe my meager efforts in the way of posting and making new threads and whatnot can somehow give it some life, but some days, it just feels futile.

But this new place you're at looks seriously slick. Bloody active and tons of people. An artist of your skill and determination is bound to be a hit. Best of luck, man.

As for me, I'll just let my eye browse RPGnet until I can gum up the courage to sign on. I want to scope out the regulars and get a feel for the place ahead of time. Hopefully I can find a decent thread to file the rust from my forum RP skills.

I know there's at least one Limbo of the Lost video on YouTube, but it only lasts about fifteen minutes or so and there's no commentary. I guess nobody could stand it longer than that... Wields-Rulebook-Heavily has them all beat, anyway.

What courage? There's nobody that will bite off your head at any of these forums. At least, not in your first post. Unless we're talking 4chan or Something Awful forums.

Well, I dunno about anyone else, but the reason for my hiatus was that I was moving desks around and running ethernet cables around my house.

EDIT: Thanks for your positive assessment of my choice. It is appreciated. RPG forums looks good. Nice selection of subforums, clean design. Can't say I see yellow very often, lol. It's special! Like honey.

If you've got other things going on, I can't blame you for not posting; let's face it, sometimes we just have more important things to do. In fact, I may take a day off from here to tend to a few things, despite my... recently acquired powers.

*coughgmodcough*

Bolstered by your words of encouragement, I shall promptly join RPGnet... first thing when I wake up. In about 12 hours. Just need to find out about their avvy size limits so I can whip something up for myself.

I can see where everyone is coming from. This place is nearly deserted all the time and more often than not, it takes days for any real post flow to pick up. Hell, I've played FF11 for a week straight and check back here at a later date and I'd be lucky to find more than 3 new posts.

I work two jobs and am in grad school, so my plate is pretty full as well.  And honestly, I feel like most of the time what I have to say is already articulated better by someone else, thus eliminating the need for me to say anything at all.  I enjoy reading  the posts here, though, even if I don't always reply.

As for other forums... a couple of years ago I tried joining up over at ConceptArt.org, when I still had ambitions of being a professional artist.  But that place is TOO massive, and I just felt like a lost voice among the masses.  Even joining up in their weekly competitions didn't do me any good, as they were basically just popularity contests.  I wanted real critique for my work, but I have a better shot of getting that over at DeviantArt (or would, if I ever posted anything new), where I at least have a tiny audience who gives me feedback.

Uh.. that sounded really whiny.  Sorry.  My point was, I favor small forums because I actually feel like a person in a smaller group, whereas large crowds, whether online or in the real world, make me nervous.

Being the Gundam nut I am, Mecha Talk (http://www.mechatalk.net/) has been my main go-to forum for the past few years. But there's a lot more than just Gundam going on there, so one need not be afraid to post topics that are outside of the norm. Big O discussion would certainly be welcome there too.

Suddenly I want to get back into Gundam.

And Macross. Macross was awesome.

The car forums I've been going to are full of HATE. German car fans who hate everything else, truck fans who hate cars, Canadians who hate Americans, Americans who hate everyone, and people who think crap like this looks good.

What is that bullshit? WHAT IS THIS? Get yourself out of there... while you still have a soul to speak of.

So Randy. Nihonmaru is continuing to please me. It also has a Vampire Knight themed skin that's much more efficient and easy on the eyes. My favorite thread there so far would have to be, "If you could be a guy for a week, what would you do?" There's still so much to learn and scope out. Making connections one person at a time. I'm gonna start a .gif thread there like how I did here, which should shake it up. How is your RPGnet expansion doing? Mostly lurking?

Yeah, that's why I stick to the general car part, instead of the volkswagen part. Those people are insane but the general car people are cool. A lot of them have burned out of any kind of fanboyism.

Occasionally those people invade a thread but it gets put down quick.

R. Dan: I just joined RPGnet. I'm going by Zolock, if you're curious. I haven't posted there yet (not sure where to begin) but having browsed around I can say this is definitely my kind of crowd. Plenty of excitement, but not too much. Just about right, I'd say. I'm going to try and get in touch with some regulars and find my place.

Glad to hear Nihonmaru is working out for you. You're a braver man than me to scout the shallows and deeps of Internet anime culture. Let's say I've seen my share of unspeakable Internet horrors-- even the most kawaii of moe gives me a twinge of fear now. But I can't say too much; I'm sure you'll find plenty of decent, reasonable people with whom to share the online experience.

First off on RPGnet, I need to learn how to actually play an RPG. I'm hoping if I just grope in the dark long enough, I'll latch onto something and then can actually open my mouth without sounding like an ignoramus. At least I know what a 20-sided die is, and what it is used for (thank God, I'd be run off otherwise). So far, I've seen no place where forum RPing can be done-- which I hope is simply my fault for not seeing it, because without one, I'll probably not last long. I can't yet afford any game boxes and I don't even have any non-online friends whom I could physically play such a game with...

When you do decide to speak, you put it very nicely, though.

Just being realistic here, but in order to make any kind of name for yourself in that site, you'd need artistic devotion and ability far exceeding anything that you or I possess. Whenever I visit ConceptArt, all I see is the best of the best. I see the things that end up in the latest big-release videogame or scifi movie.

Indeed, I saw a thread all about applying logic and reason to Gundam mecha designs, and melding their concepts with existing platforms to create ideals, and plan the future of sci-fi mecha. Damn that's like half the stuff I daydream about.

It's an efficient and neutral format. I like it.
