Okay, I keep hearing how ZOMGAWESOME this show is, but honestly, the first episode kind of underwhelmed me.  Maybe my expectations are too high from all the hype?  It's shiny and all, but the story didn't really grab me.

Heh. I think one thing you have to keep in mind that the guys saying "Holy crap!" are all guys. It feels like a very guy-centric animé.

Yeah, I'll get back to listing why the show's awesome. Give me time.

Fair enough.  I've heard a few girls give it a thumbs-up as well, so perhaps further viewing needs to be done before I dismiss it entirely.
I like to compare it to Trigun. The first lot of episodes are comedy/action... they have their moments but could be confused with "Dime a dozen" filler eps. But like Trigun, Gurren-Lagann then increases its plot and depth in a hurry.
In fact the second half of the series, while still retaining some of its comedy, is pretty much no-filler. That's not to the say the first half is full of filler... Each episode adds to the story in some way, either introduction of characters, or character development. Technically none are filler, although a few stand out as more comedy than plot related. Roll Eyes (Like Act18 of Big O)

Sadly, I only had time last week to check out the intro to Gurren Laggan. However, that intro was cool... I'm looking forward to watching a few actual episodes. That is, after midterms...

OK, midterms are done (and the results are good), so on to Gurren Lagann. Darn, I haven't had to read subtitles since Macross, and these were much faster... Two episodes in (I needed time to watch another Trigun episode), and it looks good so far...

It's tough to judge this against Big O. It's "brother" subplot is very good. A little more outspoken than Robotech Gen 1, FMA, or Eureka Seven, but I like the extra attitude. The mecha are a cool concept. The scene with Lagann booking from a Gunman with this "Ahhh!!!" look on it's face is going to be tough to forget... Smiley

What gave you that idea, Bro? Yeah, the Simon/Kamina scenes sort of have that "buddy movie" feel to them. However, the series has alot of detail to it, that I'll follow it for a bit more.

Tifaria: If it weren't for Yoko, I would say yeah, it's going to be guy-centric. However, she's an important member of her villiage, an awesome "marksman" (sorry, there's no such term as markswoman), and Simon's and Kamina's guide to survival on the surface. Yeah, I think it's worth it to check out a few more episodes. I certainly will...

Update: OK, 3 episodes in, and Yoko is her villiage's best marksman... I kind of figured that, since she has the only weapon with a scope sight. Also, I can definitely say the main plot isn't guy-centric, but I'm glad there's still a guy-centric subplot, know what I mean, Bro?

That flag thing.... completely made my day. Grin
The quote that follows in the article is priceless...
Quote
The dragon itself was inspired by a Japanese anime television series.

"It represents shouting "UNION!" and joining together; kicking reason to the curb and doing the impossible; fighting the power, and piercing the heavens," he said

Kamina equals the best supporting male character of all anime ever.

According to Anime-News-Network, we have an English cast for Gurren Lagann (for those who don't know).

Originally all that was known was Chris Patton was to be cast as Rossiu... but now we have quite a few more characters cast. If I've read the page correctly, it's ADV Films doing the dub.

Voice Actor -- Character
Brett Weaver as Kamina   (Touji from NGE)
Tiffany Grant as Yoko Ritona   (Asuka from NGE)
Brittney Karbowski as Kinon   (...?...)
Chris Patton as Rossiu   (Greed from FMA)
Hilary Haag as Darry   (Teletha from FullMetalPanic, and Milk-chan from Super Milk-chan)
Jason Douglas as Kittan   (Rudolf Hess from FMA: Conqueror of Shambala)
Kira Vincent-Davis as Kiyal   (Osaka from Azumanga Daioh)
Monica Rial as Kiyoh   (Lyra from FMA)
Vic Mignogna as Viral   (Edward Elric from FMA)

Still no word on who's to play Simon... So far I personally think this casting is pretty good, though we'll have to wait until the first episode is dubbed to know how clean the transition is from Japanese to English for this most epic of shows.

Sounds like a pretty veteran cast; should be a decent dub. I don't really know much about most of those characters, but based on art, some of those look like they might be typecasts.

Maybe ADV's gonna use two actors for Simon, and want it to be a shock or something.

Ok, wait, I haven't been following this but the show, I hear, is amazing. Is this just going to be DVD'd or will it come on the television at some point (like has that been announced yet or what have ye).

I haven't heard of any television networks picking up Gurren Lagann, but that doesn't mean it won't happen. ADV doesn't have a great record when it comes to licensing shows to other networks, so it'll likely just stay on the Anime Network (which is now solely On Demand).

It may have been a bit corny, but honestly: awesome trailer is awesome.

So I watched the first 5 or so episodes, I plan on doing some more of that soon. The first three were really great, the second two were filler-y, and I'm definitely the wrong demographic for the fanservice salt...

But I'm more than willing to ignore that in favor of the robots and the overblown action and the sunglasses. Picture related.
