I guess that explains why everyone has large eyes in anime, Asian cultures show emotions with the eyes rather than the mouth.

Good, that means you still have a soul.
I had actually been somewhat aware of this phenomenon, but didn't know it was never confirmed with any scientific evidence before.

Those icons came from people on message boards (Possibly even American ones) mimicking anime faces. I seriously doubt they came about that because some East Asian consciously decided Western emoticons were hard to read.

Your explanationl makes more sense. The article was probably ill-informed in its example. Going by the Asian people I've known in college, they all used the conventional style.
However, the article didn't claim that people developed different smileys because of difficulty understanding. I think it was just trying to say that the anime-style speaks more strongly to Asians.
I'm wondering why the author decided that the anime-stye represents how Asians generally chat. Mere ignorance, I suppose.

Also, not to sound racist... but I know some Asians who's eyes you can't see at all. Think Brock from Pokemon.

The ^____________^ style emotocons are more than likely Weeaboo in origin and their general idea that Japan = is a magical fantasy land with blond haired blue eyed Japanese people, giant robots, and other anime related stuff.

I guess that would be a more indirect connection. Emoticons being influenced by anime which in turn is influenced by how people in Asian cultures interpret facial expressions.

And so the twisted threads of influence lay bared...
