Kill me after reading.

If you like Dorothy does that mean your a pedophile?Huh!
I mean, at the most she can't be over 8 years old. And at the youngest (meaning at the beginning of the anime in ep.1) she couldn't be over 1 month. I realize you can't get in trouble for liking an anime character, but still in a way that freaked me out. This could also be the reason Roger doesn't show a lot of interest in her initially, because he knows she is underage. >.>'  Food for bad thoughts...

And before anyone asks "Wait what about Rosco Fitzgerald?"  Well he is at the youngest 40, and at oldest 60. So it wasn't really a big deal he was married, because most likely he got married after the event, in the case of he's 60 scenario, he would've been 20.

Now, armed with this knowledge, go comb through some of the old fanfiction on here. You probably will not be sleeping for a few days.

See, I liked Dorothy because she was an interesting character. Not in a "I want to jump her cold, metallic bones" way.

Cause, you know, she's a teenage girl.
And a robot.

She's a teenage girl robot. So it's weird twice.

Age and physical human appearance are different in terms of "right and wrong" as far as androids go.  R.Instro is built to look like a 20 year old man for sure, but who knows how long he's been operating.

According to Paradigm City, R. Dorothy is modeled after Wayneright's dead daughter... who was 18.

Even without the background knowledge, how the hell did you see Dorothy and think "8 years old"??  No way she's modeled on a girl that young.

I'm like 70% sure at one point in the show it mentions her being modeled after a 'young daughter'

Or something, it could be one of those weirdass japanimu things where its all "Sure it looks like a 16 year old BUT THEY'RE 18 I SWEAR"

See, I liked Dorothy because she was an interesting character.

Everybody says this when essentially the dorothy character was just the albino from EVA but a robot.

So they gave her a weird quasi sexual-tension with the main character and put her in a catsuit because they knew the fans would be all "UNF UNF DOROTHY-CHANUUU =^-^=", and meanwhile you have the R-D one (why was it built, why did it go rogue and start killing) and the entire concept of "The Union" or whatever that was assaulting the city, and then that more or less got thrown out. Oh and why did a cyrillic satillite crash, FUCK ALL OF THESE QUESTIONS WE NEED MORE POWER RANGERS MEGAZORD FIGHTS AND DOROTHY LOOKING LIKE SHE'S GONNA KISS ROGER.

Then they put in an 'ending' and figured people would just buy the vague explanation of "We totally had a plan for season 3, one we will never reveal but we totally had an idea"

Face it, they went off the tracks entirely around the time they realized they just had to string along a devoted fanbase.

Yeah...I never really wanted Roger to end up with Dorothy. I totally wanted him to plow Angel.

Also yeah, the 2nd season totally didn't make sense. It started cool, then like Sharpie said, Soviet satellite of DOOM and French people who turned out to not be from France and then ....Huh ...... PROFIT!

Before somebody goes "zomg why are you even here then if you hate it". I never said I HATED the show.

I thought it was sort of a neat mashup of the art design from the batman cartoon, and the plot of the movie dark city.

It's just yeah the second season everybody demanded...sort of misfired on a number of cylinders, and I honestly doubt there was even a plan for a third season despite what whatshisname, the writer, retroactively claims (notice he never even hints at details)

This and the idea of a secondary civilization that for whatever reason wanted to fight paradigm city, both ideas that could have gone places.

But nope, just throw those away and have two people in robots scream at each other then a big pink one goes all Truman show on everything.

It seemed to me like they had a whole bunch of cool ideas, ran with them, and then suddenly realized they completely ran out of time to actually resolve anything. So then they made a tremendously confusing finale that made things EVEN MORE confusing.

And like Sharp, I first noticed the art style of the show. There were 2 guys in suits (Roger and Beck) talking, one of them was bouncing around like an idiot, and then HOLY SHIT GIANT ROBOTS WITH HUGE PISTON CRUSHING ARMS THIS SHOW IS AWESOME.

Going alllll the way back to the dorothy thing. I found it funny that for a while they had her making these weird mechanical whirring noises everytime she moved, until they forgot about it. The idea of some crudely-made android that was loud as hell when moving seemed to fit with the relatively low-tech look of the other robots.

Yeah I know we're all supposed to be all "GRRRR, WILLIAMS STREET".

Look I really liked serial experiments lain, so I'm not saying Konaka is a bad writer, but with that he had 12 episodes and one of them was just this hilarious infodump where he correlates everything from the knights templar up through ARPAnet into the plot (also if anybodys seen the end of that series, notice how it's like IDENTICAL to big o*). My point is, maybe he works better in smaller orders, maybe episode 12 really was supposed to be the end. Also, nearly identical ending to two shows he wrote, it's entirely possible he ran out of ideas, or only had half-formed ones.

And yes I know when I had this argument with zola she was all "NO HE SWORE IN AN INTERVIEW HE HAD PLENTY OF IDEAS". I've never seen even the vaguest mention of said ideas, if he was serious and cared that much, you'd think he'd at least reveal an inkling considering this is now a beyond dead franchise. So zola if you're reading this, I still think you're a cretin sort of.

(*We don't have spoiler text here, I don't think. So just ignore this part if you haven't seen SEL. In the last episode of it, the main character 'resets' existence so everybodys lives become normal again and she's nonexistant. Big O was...oh right, the entire thing resets to episode 1)

Quote
Beck

This got RETARDED in the second season. Because they kept showing him a couple of times, as a total "hey people were amused by his one or two appearances, so lets give him an afro and make him spaz the fuck out a bunch of times" fanwank move.

So yes, they listened to the fans...and this sometimes is not a positive thing for shows to do.

I put Dorothy at about 8 at the end of the second season. We have little idea as to how long she has been alive. As we have little to no idea how old she is, discounting the human version, we must assume she just looks older then she is. I based her age off of a few things. Each episode takes 1-5 days, and we have no idea how much time is between each episode is as well. Thus why I said Dorothy maybe around 8 at most.

I read trolling words, but I see someone who cares enough to point something like that out. Tsk tsk.

I'm fairly sure that the "young daughter" comment came from either Roger or Wayneright himself (leaning towards Roger without looking it up). And from the context, I'd say "young" compared to old man Wayneright... who was ancient. Dorothy is a teenager for sure (at least in appearance tho the metal may be newer than that), but honestly the absurdity of a 25 year old Roger liking a girl/robot/robot-girl who's based off of a teenage girl is even laughed at by Roger at several points in the series.

I think Sharpshooter's posts here kinda devolved into a rant... or troll... both probably. Ignore him Tongue He's insane.

"Each episode takes 1-5 days, and we have no idea how much time is between each episode is as well"
We don't know this... at all. There's time that passes but it could be months or merely the next day. My own theory is that R.Dorothy is either built very recently (within a year of Episode 1) because of her proximity to the Dorothy1 project, or she was built over a decade ago within a few years of the original girl dying.

"Nani? I know very little of Serial Experiments Lain. Are you inferring Lain has a god complex?"

Spoiler alert: Lain pretty much is god

Picture the matrix without trenchcoats or keanu reeves and you're in the ballpark of that show

Lain is Big Venus?

Yup

And at one point someone has a psychotic break from seeing an alien dressed in a sweater, and begins making dialup modem noises. Come to think of it...yeah that was a pretty weird show, drifted into twin peaks territory at times.
