I gave you fair warning. Nobody can stop me now.The Official WotC DnD SiteThis is CoA's own thread for the discussion of DnD, and more generally role-playing games of like or compatible nature. Now, this might be hypocritical of me, but I've never had the pleasure of playing this game-- or any other tabletop RPG. I have wanted to for years, but I could never figure out how the damn thing was supposed to proceed-- finally, a friend of mine explained that it works by just saying what you want your character to do and having the DM referee... shag, that's slick! This said, I plan to get more involved in this genre of games. I'm looking forward to the day when I finally do have enough excess funds to pick up a 4th Edition box. Until and then, let's talk about it. Rouse thy inner nerd! If you've got a character you've created, a campaign your involved in or some exorbitantly expensive item you've purchased in the name of geekery, tell us all about it here. Commence.

I love DnD, but have yet to play. There is no one to really play with here. But I do have dice and sometimes do quick plays with friends. A quick play is where a random person out of a group Dm's while everyone else says what they do to the other people present. The DM thinks if a number, and if you guess it right the attack is successful.
Never played a full on game before though.

I know there aren't many people here now, but perhaps one day soon, if we can raise the level of activity, it'll be possible for us to open a workable DnD RP thread. As much as I'd like to, however, there's not much point in opening one now, as you said.
This "quick play" you speak of sounds interesting, but... really, I don't know if it compares to the satisfaction of the real thing. Even so, it still requires people.

I don't think I would play D&D over a forum. The fun is being there in person with friends while you make up BS stories and fidget with stuff on the table.

Presently, I'm investigating chat-based RPing using Call of Cthulhu in IRC. Supposedly there's still a built-in dice roller device that could be used with IRC. In that case, I'll be busy over with my RPGnet buddehs playing CoC that way.
If anything comes of that, maybe one day we can consider arranging something like that amongst ourselves.
EDIT: Well, actually, I'd rather do it over standard IM if I could wrangle it. That'd be way better.

You don't like IRC?
A live chat RP sounds like it could be way more fun than a BBS/Message Board/Forum RP, so long as you don't get some asshole in the channel.

Well, it's not that I dislike IRC per se. I just like IM programs like Trillian a lot better.
NOTE: Not to say that I've ever actually used IRC. I've seen it used, heard about it, and it has something of a... reputation with me. If anybody can prove otherwise, I'd be honestly glad to hear it. Also, beyond that it something and that it can be used to chat with, I have no clue how it works.
Now, I don't know much about this. But is there some way to make a "private room" just for a few pre-arranged guys? I.E., invite only, no crashers? If I could set that up-- on whatever chat program-- that'd be quite cool.
Still, it'd take a lot of prep and arrangements beforehand. I'd love to do something like that with the guys from this board, but things have been so sparse lately I don't think it'd last beyond preparations.

I know there's a way to open up a chatroom on, say, AIM, but I haven't done one of those in years. As one of the older web technologies still in wide use, there's plenty of support for IRC, you just have to know where to look. But yeah, you're probably right about it not lasting. By the way, have you always been a Global Moderator, Randolf? If not, congrats!

Thanks, theEND. I was exalted to the position about a week ago. Vain as it is, I'm glad someone finally noticed.
Okay, one more question, which may the dumbest of all: is IRC just an application I can download somewhere, or is it something more esoteric than that? Upon deeper recollection, I think I may have used it at least once way back at Paradigm City about four years ago. In fact, Fallen Phoenix would make a private channel, then invite some of us to participate in that chat. Hell if I remember how that worked, though.
EDIT: Okay, never mind. I went out and got Visual IRC. Frankly, this is the most ancient Internet artifact I've seen in a while. I half expect to have to type something in binary. I'll see if I can get anywhere with this.

Haha, no, no binary. It is all text based, so it'll take a while to get used to, but if you can get the hang of it, IRC isn't so difficult to use as it would appear.
I usually lurk on the irc.rizon.net servers as EyeOfPain, Feel free to /msg me, though I may not always be around.
