Title: FLCL
Post by: The Ghost Of Ember on July 25, 2007, 08:39:03 PM
My current anime affair, FLCL is short, only six episodes. But what it lacks in length it certainly makes up in style and intensity. It's a romp of comedy and action and general nonsense. It's also often confusing as hell, and sometimes the jokes don't quiet translate (thanks to the nature of puns). The soundtrack is in a league of its own. Not quiet up to the Cowboy Bebop gold standard maybe, but truly something special.

I keep trying to come up with a basic description, but it just comes out more and more absurd. So what the hell. Naota lives in Mabase, an average town dominated by a giant Medical-Mechanica plant that billows steam every day. Everything there is normal, until a girl runs him over with a Vespa...

I get the impression this is an anime that definitely won't be for everyone. If you actually sit down and watch it you'll probably just go 'huh'? I'm still not even certain if I understand it. But that's why it appeals to me.

Yeah, I didn't like this. Kudos to those that did, but it was completely pointless, with a barely coherent story that tried to keep it from totally being Aqua Teen in its format. Most of the sexually charged humour was stale and overwrought in its fashion, the robot designs were weak and the main characters had absolutely no empathetic features. There was no way for me to get into this show, and I personally give it my lowest rating, a 0% on the scale and a total F grade.

You fail at life.

Idly, couldn't FLCL technically go under the Mecha Anime forum, since it invovles quite a few of them?

I was debating that, for some reason I was thinking that it was giant mecha forum. Now I see that I was mistaken. Natch. As well, I for some reason didn't include the giant mecha in that one episode in my assessment for some reason.

I don't always have to make decisions that make sense!

I liked the ending to the Manga when Haruko gave Nauta the Vespa.

Anyway, piss off. I liked the random pointlessness that is FLCL.

and don't DARE insult my intelligence, you suggested that I make an SD AMV.

I loved FLCL. It was one of those things that made no sense but was SO COOL you had to see it over and over.

Which Adult Swim did. And eventually (and after googling it a bunch of time) it makes sense.

I still haven't read the manga. How does it stack up in comparison to the anime?

It's... different.

I mean, it's basically FLCL in that it uses the same characters, settings, and general plotline, but there's a lot more angst, a bunch of the personalities and motivations are completely different... you'd really just have to read it for yourself.

Like I said, I thought it had a much better ending. Getting the Hover Vespa instead of the Bass was cooler.

Oh! I need to find the picture that I drew. It is an almost exact representation of Haruko on her knees from the manga in the bunny suit.

I bought the whole thing subbed on a single disk a while back.  It took about five minutes for me to admit to myself that it was a bootleg, but meh.

Good show.

I don't really blame you. My ethics tend to malfunction when they attempt to charge me 40-70 dollars for a six episode OVA. I haven't actually bought a copy yet, and I'm not actively looking for a bootleg, I'm still looking for the best deal, and if it just happens to be a bootleg? Oh well.

hobbies.

Any way, I saw FLCL on sale at Fry's Electronics for a mere 30 bucks for the whole series, and I considered getting it if only for those friends of mine who seem to oddly enjoy this show. But then I considered, and realized people might think I liked the show if I gave money in support of it.

But Dilbert is a profound commentary on the plight of working-class humanity and their struggle to escape the cubicles that provide financial comfort, yet stifle their mental, social, and creative freedom in favor of an oppressive corporate mindset!

Actually, Dilbert had at least two explosions in the animated series, more if the De-Trafficator was more than a one-episode gag. Besides, Dilbert is slice-of-life fiction; that's a very different genre to random weird shit, even if I know people whose actual lives are perfectly at home in both camps.
