Title: Death Note
Post by: Galatea on August 01, 2007, 07:30:24 PM
I must confess that i actually have my own death note since i liked the series so much. Death Note was such a awesome unique detective 'What a Twist!' anime that even though the sereis has ended their screening soon a 3hr special of the series some time next month (i think).
The live action movies are also not bad (just don;t watch the end of the second one, it blows).

We sent a threat to that CEO the other day, to have them wire all the company's funds to our bank accounts remember?

I'm talking about the Death Note, from the manga/series. Do they have actual ones that they are selling as merchandise, or does this person actually have the power to kill people by writing down their names in their FiveStar notebook. Because that would be actually very interesting.
Peace.

Hmmmm. Killing off criminals and hoping to one day become god of a new world order. Yeah, that actually sounds like a typical high school fantasy to me.

Light's God complex was actually a rather hilarious concept to me, i mean, just because you can kill off people in a new and inventive way doesn't make you a God. Dropping the atom bomb on Hiroshima didn't make the American's Gods.

I absolutely love this series and highly recommend the anime. I watched the anime before reading the manga, and just the way the whole thing was put together was incredibly well-done. Great characters, direction, plot twists, animation, sound etc... Having finished the show, I'm reading the manga (now on volume 4) and anxiously awaiting the follow-up special that's supposed to air later this summer.

Yeah, that's the cool thing about Death Note; how Light uses his intellegence to continue to find way to get away with what he's doing and to get out of one situation out of another.

The manga just keeps getting better and better from there on out. I finished it a while ago and I need to watch the series now. Anybody know when its coming over to America by any chance?

I saw like the first ten minutes of it on YouTube one time, but that was it. Up to the part where they were in a cafeteria I think.

How is the live action, any good? Since I saw earlier this year, I think the best approach would be to make a Death Note live-action picture in the same aspect as Pan's Labyrinth was made. Just how Pan alone was made would work great for the Shinigami in Death Note.

No, no. The shit's real alright. I'm just saying like as far as Pan goes to make the Shinigamis and their world something similar to that of the art direction of Pan's or something.

Death Note is no delusion, I just want to see the Shinigamis done right is all.

Yes, yes it fucking is.

See, I actually liked Death Note (who let Scott in?) and I'd be interested in seeing the anime series Good writing, complicated and full developed arcs, good characters, intriguing twists, etc, etc . But if its anything like that picture (I know its not), then this would be the first good thing [adult swim] would have done in a long, long, LONG time.

So... should I watch this or not? It kind of sounds interesting, but at the same time it doesn't, like no other. "Boy writes names in five star notepad, people die." God, that kind of power... But at the same time, do they just keel over? Do they die in epic and interesting ways a la Final Destination?
War.

Title: Re: Death Note
Post by: EyeOfPain on October 19, 2007, 11:06:48 AM
The show is really about the battle of wits waged between Light and L, so if you're looking for gruesome death, the show isn't for you.

War.
First and foremost, Final Destination sucked. Hard. All of them.

Second, the default way of death are heart attacks. So yeah, they just "keel over" with lack of a better phrase. There are some cases were the writer writes a little something extra to command the way the die, like "walks in front of traffic" or "pulls out a pair of scissors and cuts himself" or something like that. But those happened rarely in the manga to mess around with the police and such.
Peace.

Let me clear things up. I hated Final Destination. All of them. But at least each death was fairly original. I'm not asking for a gorefest, I'm just asking for more than "So I said to the guy: 'Him? Council President? Over my dead bod--*thud*"
War.

Death Note is more of a Psychotic thriller. It makes you really have to use your brain in ways that are simply amazing, and the actors aren't so hard on the eyes, if i do say so...

[EDIT] English dub has been released!

http://www.adultswim.com/video/?episodeID=8a25c39215b258260115b392d7a20045

Turns out the voice of ryuk is Brian Drummond, which i think is the dude that did Vegeta (This apple is OVER NINE THOUSAAAAANNNNDDD!)
the voice of light is Brad Swaile, the dude ho did adult gohan in the Ocean dub of DBZ.

OK, I caught the first episode of Death Note on Adult Swim (Sunday, around 3AM EST or so), and I liked the animation, and the story had a Twilight Zone type feel to it. (Remember the chapter in the new Twilight Zone movie, with the ill-tempered kid that could make real ANYTHING that he could imagine. It's that kind of cold, creepy feeling...)

Yes, I did see a couple over-the-top Final Destination-esque deaths, but that didn't detract from the episode.

However, given it's Twilight Zone feel to it, I wonder how "fresh" they can keep each episode. T.Z. episodes were two-parter's at the most, and although it was evident some T.Z. episodes sacrificed some detail to fit into their time slot, I'm still wondering if there is enough Death Note material for a full season.

It's only the first episode, though, so I shouldn't think that hard about it yet. I liked it...

It did have that feel yeah, but the episode's pace seemed faster than the manga to me is all. I mean already, Light's using the Death Note like you know what but hell it worked in itself for this episode.

FN, it sounds like you didn't read the manga that Death Note was based off of. Like I told DM beforehand, there are some over the top deaths but those come rarely and few and far in between. Also, I have no worries about them keeping each episode fresh (L is coming up in the next episode), because if they do their jobs right (they hardly do) and stick to the original material, they should have no problems on that front.

Anyway, good start off even if the pace annoyed me a bit. Good animation too.
Peace.

This, and then some. I was thinking the exact same thing. I mean, he doesn't sound like anything I pictured at first, which was some egotistial, slick, know it all with a god-complex (hi, Xy-poo >_> ) but he just sounded like an over the top schoolboy. Anyway, I might get used to it the more the series goes on, but yeah. Sounds terrible at the moment.

Honestly, I think Light's supposed to sound like an average school kid, since besides being a bit smarter than most, he is. I'm sure Swaile grow into the role as the show goes on, and will probably mature a great deal after episode 25, or whenever it is.

He's in his third year which is the equivalent of a senior at the start of the series. He graduates then becomes a college student for about half the series. The latter half he is in his twenties.

Don't waste your time with the live-action. It's ho-hum. Are you reluctant to watch the animé because of its length? It's generally worth the entertainment you'll get.

Oh! Light's voice actor sucks. Thats why. Nothing wrong with Death Note being on Adult Swim, Light just sounds like a wuss.

Have you two heard the Japanese voice actors? They sounded very, very well chosen. I'd watch the whole series over again, if only the American voice actors had the same sound.

Since Death Note, Light's voice actor has been popping up in all sorts of similar roles. Code Geass and Gundam 00, as far as I know. I guess Death Note really made him.

Yeah, Light's voice was unusually meek, considering the great power he had been given. I don't know if this is on purpose, to give a "wolf in sheeps clothing" appearance to him, or to make it easier to partner his character with the shinigami. (If he was egotistical, he may have ignored the shinigami's guidance.) Yeah, I'm also dealing with the bad voicing for the sake of the story.

On the other hand, they picked the perfect voice for Ryuk. I'm surprised that Brian Drummond didn't take some jobs away from Steven Blum, when doing character voices similar to Ryuk. Maybe Brian should do some voicing for X-Men's Wolverine?

Hmm. having had a chance catch an episode, I have to say, Ocean has problems with long shows. The dub overall is pretty decent, but however much like InuYasah, the dub is pretty typical TV fair. Pass. Ocean is capable of doing amazing dubs however, watch Black Lagoon.

I don't remember anyone else mentioning it here, Bllue. Has it been localized for English-speaking audiences, though? From what I've heard, it's not really playable unless you can read Japanese.

No, it's not in english yet. I was actually in japan and i picked up an ad for it. I almost died. This was in the summer, so we'll most likely have to wait a good while.

Death Note is Serious Business.

This is what, the 4th or 5th incident like this this year alone? We'll probably have another incident like this in about 2 weeks.

This [school] has a new order now.... it has a new GOD!

I say let the kids pretend to kill their enemies. Don't doctors say that writing a disgustingly angry letter and then ripping it up is a great way to relieve anger and stress? Death Note is pretty much that in these sorts of cases. Unless you're an unstable freak... that is...

True enough. I have to admit it's rather hilarious to hear about these sorta things and at the same time a bit sad.

I saw the first live-action movie at a theater, if thats what you're asking about. It was cool, in a cheesy B-movie sort of way. I enjoyed it.

U.S Remake? You betcha.

Some info on the U.S remake.

Edit: Took out the run and hide bit, I'm guessing that was the reason it was locked, although I was just poking fun at the general mind set a remake is done, oh well. Sorry if it upset anyone, although not sure why it would lol.

No, it was the first live action movie, produced before the anime.

so there's only two movies. this is made more confusing by the fact that i've seen pirated waaaaaaaay before all this hype.

There is a third movie (L: Change the WorLd), and is about the case L worked on with Misora, or so I recall hearing.

There are (going to be(?)) two animated specials retelling the story from Ryuk's perspective.

What the hell are you two talking about? Death threats? Because those are nothing new, right, Nine?
War.

Peace.

I have the Ryuk Notebook. Haven't written anybody in it. I'm trying to see how much I can fight the urge before I roll a d20 for Luck to see if I can remove some useless people from this planet via a brutal kitchen knife suicide at 1am where the person stabs themselves repeatedly in the torso area, then slices that vein on the inner thigh. In the 15 seconds they have left, just for kicks, they slice their throat too...if they can muster that kind of strength. I'd hate to go through all that thinking up just to have a heartattack as the result because one part at the end couldn't be done. And I need to specify a number of times for stabbing...umm...how about three in the gut and one in each lung. I think that works well enough. Oh, and the suicide occurs in the parents house.

Sorry, I should have put a disclaimer that it's 5am, i should be sleeping but I'm on the computer drinking Ginger Ale and not caring about what I say, so I'm typing pretty much EVERYTHING that comes to mind as it comes to mind. Read all of my posts from this timeframe and you'll see just how much I rambled. This is why I avoid the computer at 5am.

Oh, and that picture. Search the motivational posters thread. There was a big deal about it to the point that someone had to circle it. Why do I think it was Money that did it?

Heehee, that was my fault, I still don't really get it....
I enjoyed your ramble, by the way. I didn't know you would did if your instructions aren't completed, because Light writes a wrong name in his notebook in the first movie. You know, I never did understand why Light only gave them heart attacks. He wasted his creativity by letting it rot...

*-* somebody acknowledged me in a nice way.... *floating*

anywho, I thought that the girl they got to play Misa in the Movies was a good choice, but I'm really not too familiar with the anime, so I can only guess that they pretty much stayed close together...

That mangaka made another series, I don't know if it's still only available in Japan, because my friend downloads it in japanese, so........ *sigh* asians and their advanced-ness...

I have a history of chronic ignored-ness. It comes from multiple births in a mexican family who always likes the other kid better... and from school mates thinking the same... >.> That's depressing...
Anyway, I'm a jerk, too, but not on purpose, so........... we'll have our vindication someday.

My friends dressed up as L last year for halloween, and this past summer for comic-con. Not the most difficult of costumes, but difficult concept...

I'm only surprised that students are still making death notes, they must not read the news. Otherwise, anytime a student does something even slightly threatening, teachers will continue to freak out and overreact.

oh isn't that true. I had a friend in high school do a fake death note. I LMAO'd as it was a joke, but the principle heard us and freaked out.
that was a year ago.

why do people freak out over a death note anyway? it's just an anime show and if you write someone's name in a book it isn't a threat really. It's just role play at that point.

Because they fear it will lead to a toxic school culture, where joking and thinking about killing others will grow less and less tabboo, to the point where doing it will also seem more accepted.

my generation has already passed that point. the one that starts this year is going to be more violent then we are.
thinking about killing and joking about are no longer taboo, not for us anyway.

I have a hard time believing those words, but don't bother trying to convince me.

In any case, nobody wants to condone an attitude like that. Hence the freak-outs.

Sure, sure, but after that, bye-bye! Even she would probably want that. With someone like Misa, emotional connections = no-no!
