This is the XM8 Modular Assault Weapon/Carbine. Google it sometime for more information, but from an official site on it, here's some expositional information on its technical capabilities. Full and open competition to select a contractor to continue RDTE (Research, Development, Test and Evaluation) will be conducted. Now, the HK416 is a gun. Kind of like an M16, but you can bury it, dump it in water, probably whack it with a hammer a few times and it still works. If it does, the unit is apparently cheap enough to manufacture that they can even make it available to National Guard and Reserve units. The HK416 is very good, too, and I'd heard that H&K had designed a firearm for the US Army, but that there was a major issue that would prevent the Army from going with it. Seems for now we're stuck with the M4 and the ancient M16-A2.

I read that if they do it, the company making the XM8 could field them 900,000 units in the first quarter of manufacture, with much more on the way. The XM8 may not be strictly superior to its H&K counterpart, but it is versatile, can be modified for different missions on the soldier's individual level, and is cheap and apparently easy to manufacture.
