Oh your god I miss Dark Forces.
Hell yeah.
One of my favorite parts is the robotics facility, on hard. After you set the charges and kill the Phase 2 trooper, then you have to go through an Alien-esque series of ventilation tunnels, hunted by Phase 1 troopers, like some kind of first-person pac-man. Except replace the cutesy ghosts with towering death-droids equipped with a vibro-sword and a reflective shield. Laying mines behind you, trying to avoid the dead-ends. Intense shit!
Still, though, I have to complain about DF in some areas. The enemies tend to have no variety, and some of the weapons are silly. Like the autogun--where does that fit in Star Wars? It's belt-fed... but doesn't fire bullets... eh? And the fusion cutter... not only does it not operate like a cutting tool... it doesn't really serve any particular function, except to sound cool and look funny. Any other gun can do what the cutter does, except with greater efficiently. Even the alt-fire for the fusion cutter is weak, when it SHOULD be a BFG-like room-sweeper.
It's such a disappointment that none of the enemies lay mines, none use the auto-gun, none use the fusion cutter (plenty of opportunities for hypothetical technicians, miners and factory workers to wield those), and none use the grenade launcher. It's a shame that enemies using thermal detonators and the concussion appear so rarely. It gets tiresome killing the same identical stormtroopers, commandos and officers, whose only difference is their sprite and their amount of health.
I was surprised to find, earlier today in fact, that the lead designer really did include weapons based on how cool they sounded, rather than what purpose they served in the game. Unlike Doom, for example, where every gun felt unique and suited towards different situations. At least, to me.
Still, as level designers and programmers, they were friggin' genius.
I'm currently replaying the Starcraft campaigns
Brood War, or original? Even now, I can't get past Zerg mission 8 in Brood War. I once watched a friend of mine beat it for me--he was a macro-management monster.
Have you tried playing the Enslaver campaign? I would like to know if you can beat Enslaver03b, and if so--how!
