Back when the Genesis was fairly recent, my little sister had the habit of throwing her controller when she lost at anything. We spent a lot on controllers, and I learned (taught myself) how to fix the damn things.

Oh man, my brother once hurled a N64 controller at the wall for...some reason. The case was whacked a bit out of alignment, but now it's the only one of my old 64 pads that still works. Go figure.

I usually buy at least one spare controller when I get a new console.

Controllers wear out faster than any other part of the console. It's normal for them to have to be replaced as they wear out, even if you don't really abuse them much. That's why a lot of gaming tournaments involving console games usually require you to bring your own controllers.

Nintendo 64 controllers had REALLY weak joysticks. I snapped the springs on at least 4 of them. Playing with a limp joystick is no fun. (lulz) There was a third party one that seemed to have a beefier stick, so those were the only ones allowed to be used for Mario Party 1's bastardly spinning games that tore a hole in your palm.

I broke a GCN controller in my bare hands. Just playing Melee. I couldn't believe it. Nintendo stock controllers seem unnaturally fragile.
