You have no need for me.

« on: March 23, 2010, 11:07:17 PM »

So I got lost memory 1 and 2 in today. A lot of interesting things I'm going to bring up and point out.
First off, this is the first time I have ever almost regretted buying a Big O item. Key word almost.
While I haven't read vol.2 yet I did get a good look a vol. 1. It is nothing like the Big O we remember from the manga. If you remember the anime went to crazyville and back. It had a couple of dark moments, but nothing like this. I bring up the anime for good reason. The manga had a few sad and strange moments, but nothing crazy. throw everything you are expecting out the window.
A lot of things we associate with Big O are giant robots, crazy, yet goofy and on occasion lovable villains (mostly beck in this case), human based robots, a piano, maybe even a mad scientist and a deranged man with a Oedipus complex. But not zombies, cannon boobs, gore, LSD or other hallucinogenics, insanity, and Dorothy agreeing to do something with Beck's cohorts.
Yup, that's what you get, all of it, in just vol. 1. At first the insanity part wasn't a big deal. Lost memory starts off with Roger getting up pre-piano awakening from a nightmare. The nightmare is a reference to the gigadues battle and becks in vol. 5 of the original manga. Later a creepy client, whos name appears to be Shirizuun, claims to be a friend of Soldrano's and Wainright's, even claiming he help build Dorothy. (he also hints at being Soldarano's son), he hires Roger to do some detective work, multiple times throughout vol 1. First he tells Roger that some cult, or maybe a better word is homeless fanatics that look like elves and wizard's, are up to something. Roger goes to see Dastun and a flashback to manga 4 about duo comes up. Dastun tells Roger that if the robot the cultists are excited about existed then hopefully the black megadues appears. Roger goes to Big Ear for info. Cut to three cultists singing to a broken down female megadues, Glenda from the anime actually, most of her armor is gone, she has a rag shirt and a rag cape. Glenda also looks like a male with all her armor and face mask missing, whose giant metal breasts are not well covered by the cape. Enter some strange guy who the cultist call "older brother leader" (who looks like Gurge from Disney's "The Black Cauldron.... BTW Gurge scares the living shit outta me) from what I can tell. Thy coerce him to climb into Glenda (doesn't take much). Roger has a hallucination about Beck talking to him, even telling him where to find Glenda. Roger wakes up and races to the scene. Cut back to all six cultists singing again, Roger comes in and calls Big O. Fighting in sues, the cultists egging on there leader, and here is the fun part, crazy guy in the megadues uses cannon boobs attack against Big O, which ultimately fails. Roger wins.

Shirizuun comes back and asks Roger to watch the grave yard where Wainright and Soldarno are buried, saying he's worried about a ghost, Roger talks to Dastun and eventually Roger pulls an all-niter watching the grave yard. But not before having a fight with Dorothy because she doesn't want to see her father's grave, saying it maters little as she doesn't want to remember how they died (this is after vol. 6, in which Dorothy gets her memories back ON THE LAST PAGE, so consider this a second season to the manga). chapter 2 tends to have gore, as an image of a Zombie biting another dead person is depicted quite clearly. Nothing shows up, Roger goes to the speak Easy for a beer and goes back to the graveyard that night. and Lo and behold there's something in the graveyard. Not, however the female ghost Roger was expecting, but a slightly larger then human black robot, who quickly pulls skulls out of graves using some strange extensions and adding them to his body, after looking at the amassing skulls Roger gets a memory of a guy that looks like Vash except for this dudes a hobo. Battle in sues, Roger wins.

Roger hasn't slept or really been home in days, both Dorothy and Norman are concerned about him. Soon as he gets home he gets a call from Shirizuun. Goes off to see him. Shirizuun warns of something (not sure what yet). Roger leaves shirizuuns place. A beck made robot comes bursting out of Shirizuuns house, Roger destroys it.  Rest of the chapter goes on about Big O fighting Beck made robots. Until Roger is finally home, about to leave to see Shirizuun again, Dorothy stops him and tells him to stay home. He tells her to back off and that he's fine. Dorothy throws a fit, yelling at Roger telling him she and Norman are both worried about him and that he needs to sleep and eat. Close-up of Roger;s face, he looks like a zombie. He gets in the car and leaves anyway, Roger not liking the fact that he hasn't slept in days. Dastun suddenly apporches Dorothy on that street telling her she needs to come with him. Cut to Shirizuuns place, he and Roger start talking, and Roger has a majorly fucked up hallucination that Shirizuun is beck. He wigs out and starts running at full speed away from beck.  Most of the hallucination is Beck with out his eyes and Beck does some charlie brown like things (over sized crying head, snoopy dance, crazy laughing face). Roger gets in the Griffin and goes to the speak easy, where Big Ear takes on the strange appearance of the eyeless charlie brown motive. Again about to drive of when he gets a call from Norman, who after a panel take on the deranged motive as well. Every character who has died in the manga at this point, and Dastun (spoiler, Angel is dead to apparently). Mocks Roger. Roger ends up back at shirizuuns place and screams Dorothy's name before blacking out.

I'll post the rest of vol.1 review and summary tomorrow. I'm kinda tired right now.

You are a fucking god. I've wanted some sort of translation to Lost Memory for years.

Really must be said though, Beck fucked Roger up good... like, tearing his hair out stark raving mad.
Let's not even get into the Schwarzwald pandemic.

I think that's because by the end of the first manga series, Beck had gone into the deepest pits of greed. He almost became sort of a demon, hence why he's got no eyes left (no soul, if you will).

Also, Alex Rosewater is in that montage of hallucinations... and I'm pretty sure he's alive.

I haven't even translated it yet. this is a rough summary of the manga. When I translate it, it will be awesome. After I get myself a cheap ass scanner I'll upload a huge rar file with both Lost Memory books and translations.

but on to the rest of book 1 summary

Everyone here remember how Dorothy was all through vol. 6? Well, from lack of sleep, insanity and not taking care of himself Roger has more or less become comatose. Beck is hinted at being alive and is using a mech to terrorize the city. Even going so far as to leave messages (in English actually) saying the cops are to stupid to catch him. Dastun is of course ma at this and tries everything to stop the wall crawling mech. However all his attempts fail, and he wonders where the black megadues is. Enter Dove, T-Bone and Curly, screaming at Rogers front door wanting to be let in because they want Rogers help. Dorothy answers, and all three start a triad trying to get her to be nice and let them in. Dorothy eventually relents and says because Dove is a woman she will let her in, but not T-Bone and Curly. Both are left crying on the door step. Dove tells Dorothy that she thinks beck is alive, and she wants to find him (like anyone here remembers vol.3 when they had a bath together... hehehe porn).  Well Dorothy is interested in finding beck herself, seeing as he's the reason Roger is in a coma like state, so Dorothy goes with the three. The three are yelling at Dorothy until she gets in the car with them saying she won't tell anyone (I'm not entirely sure, but I think Dorothy may have mentioned the cops and the three wigged out). Dove, T-Bone and Curly are all cold because the cars heater is broken. Dove asks why Dorothy isn't cold. to which she quickly replies about not feeling it, astound them all. Now the cohorts and Dorothy are at the speak easy, and Dove, T-bone and Curly are trying to get info from Big Ear about Beck, failing miserably. Dorothy then steps in and does Rogers routine, place a wad of cash on the table (making the three do a double take) and asking Big Ear for info. Cut to Dustan still trying desperately to take down the beck mech. Now dove T-Bone curly and Dorothy are near the scene. Dustan sees the cohorts and asks what they are doing with Dorothy? They say nothing is the matter and go. A little later dove is crying and T-Bone and Curly look sad. Dorothy then hands them one of becks "you can't get me" note. Their happy and over joyed, but Dorothy now seems upset. Cut to Norman trying to help Roger. Back to the cohorts and Dorothy. they are in the car, and beck minions are happy he's alive (Dorothy just sits quietly) until they are about to pass the nighting gale club. She tells curly to stop driving. Cue beck mech bursting through the front of the club. They all get out of the car, becks minions jumping with joy. Here, in my opionin, comes the best part of vol. 1. Dorothy picks up a broken pillar (which is still larger then she is) and starts running at the beck mech. She runs in front of the mech and throws the pillar in front of one of the mech wheels, and it falls like a top. yes you read that right, Dorothy defeats a giant robot by herself. Now the three cohorts look like they are about to cry, but Dorothy opens the top of the mech to reveal beck isn't inside, but a young business man is. all three cry and Dorothy goes home.
Long chapter is long

So as it turns out shirizuun is dead (and a woman, how the hell did I miss that?). he's (she's? I swear shirizuun looks like a guy) been dead since Roger went into the coma state. Dustan talks to Norman about the (wo)man, but Norman can tell him nothing other then he (she) was Roger's client. Dustan leaves, enter giant sheep. Roger wakes up from his coma, but he is still delusional, thinking he's in his suit, he runs to the balcony (again everything is still in a charlie brown motive) and sees beck taunting him, even Norman seems to be taunting him. He tries to call Big O, but Big O never comes. cut to mp's trying to fight sheep, yeah like that'll work. cut back to Roger, he's walking in a trance like state, thinking he is running, to the hanger. Roger gets in Big O, and thinking he's actually doing something, fights off beck in his mind. Roger comes out the winner, but not because he defeated beck (beck actually runs off), but because Dorothy was calling his name. After he wakes up she tells him what has happened to him. Roger is back to himself, laughing at his ordeal and asking Norman to ready Big O for battle. Roger and Dorothy both hop in Big O and go out to fight the sheep.

end vol. 1
now for some extra stuff.
Everything in Lost Memory, such as billboards, street signs, department stores, even restaurants, are all in English. There's a Red Lobster (lol), a shopping district and much more, with everything in English.
Wainright's last name is spelled Weingwright on his grave stone, and Soldrano's first name is spelled Miguel.

I'll edit later with more stuff, but now I gotta go.

I'm not kidding. next to his (her) name it says gender is female. he(she) doesn't even have boobs, even old lady boobs! That's what's getting me, it makes no sense. Shirizuun wears male clothes, 1920's style to boot. she even uses male forms of speech. How to fuck can he be a she. Maybe the writes didn't understand that the female was used for girls in English.

anyway, some more fun facts.
Wainright's name in Japanese is pronounced Ueinorato, not kidding. there is no WE or WA sounds in Japanese.

now for vol. 2. I'm only going to review chapter 1 because it will take you time to get.

So Roger is now fighting a sheep (which the writers wrote seep in crable. yay engrish) with Dorothy along for the ride. Just as Rogers about to hit it in the head it jumps aside. Roger tries to use Big O's pile driver to defeat it when Dorothy tells him to stop, and to actually not fight with it. Roger replies he at least has to stop it. Cut to Rosewater and Angel (nope she ain't dead) Rosewater goes on about how the megadues will destroy the sheep. Cut back to Roger fighting the sheep, who keeps using smoke screen to dodge Rogers attacks. the sheep is now using it's front paws to hold on to Big O's head, so it can avoid attacks. Big O tosses the sheep off, and pulls of a horn, and as Roger is about to hit it, Dorothy tells Roger to stop and not to hurt the sheep. Again, Roger goes to pile drive the sheep again and Dorothy grabs his hand, telling him if he has to hit the sheep then at least hit it in the center of the body, not the head. Big O then pile drives the sheep in the stomach. It's head explodes and an escape pod it throw out. Dorothy simply yells Rogers name and he catches the pod. Both Dorothy and Roger jump out onto Big O's hand and open the pod. And inside is a small BABY! yes a baby, not more then a few months old. Roger tells the baby boy not to cry and holds out his finger, which the baby grabs. Cut to Rosewater and angel talking, about the baby. It's name is sagadausu. The cultist (from previous vol.) found the sheep, and from what I can tell Rosewater put the baby inside the small cockpit. Cut back to Roger and Dorothy plus little sagadausu, but with Rosewater still talking about the child. Dorothy is now holding Sagadausu, and he seems to really like her, with Roger looking at the child. Rosewater still talking (sorry I can't understand what's he's saying yet), and the chapter ends with Dorothy still holding Sagadausu and Roger still wondering what to do about a baby pilot.

Yeah. Yeah you read the last sentences right. Dorothy was holding the infant pilot she knew was inside the sheep. Roger realizes why Dorothy made him hit the body instead the head. Unfortunately for the rest of the manga, there is no mention of baby Sagadausu. Nothing at all! no mention as to weather Dorothy and Roger take care of the child or leave it at an orphanage. Sagadusu looks like a cupie doll, and during the part where Rosewater and Angel are talking Angel looks upset about the child being in the cockpit.
I think Sagadausu is Angels' baby. in two panels Angel looks like she is about to cry, even though in the rest of the manga she looks like her regular snarky self. I have no idea what happens to this kid! The manga took an anime turn at the end of this chapter, they freaking drop all info on the child. Actually this whole vol. takes on an anime second season spin.

so that will take you a while to digest.

I fucked up good. I miss read Megadues (I always get me and sa mixed up in katakana). the kid doesn't have a name. and he is mentioned once more in vol.2, in a flash back Roger has. It merely shows and image of the child crying and Roger is wondering if what he's fighting has a kid in it too.

tl;dr
your almost as bad as a bot Sharp. that's shorter then what I wrote originally.

well now that I'm making this post I'm going to  point something out about lost memory.
Lost Memory isn't just a continuation of the manga. It's also a bridge to the anime, well the first season anyway. It makes references to "Missing Cat" and "Beck Comes back". Beck comes back is more noticable as an influence. In both vol's of Lost memory beck does his usual thing and taunts Roger.
Missing cat is shown rather then hinted at. Roger buy's a cat that looks like a larger eared and more hyper version of Pero. This Pero doesn't like Roger much, but does the same as it's predecessor and follows Dorothy around every where. Even showing the(um, who ever pero's parents where) sitting on the couch just like in the anime.

I think it is more a bridge the gap manga then a continuation.

yeah. All I've been able to understand is that Dorothy keeps getting flowers, and the guy from last volume that looks like vash has returned.

Uh yea your katakana must be way off. Of course there is a Wa/We sound in Japanese. Wa is one of the basic hiragana sounds. as for "We" a normal sized katakana "u" and a small "e" is how you write the "we" sound in katakana. Check the wikipedia page too it shows the Japanese pronunciation as "Āru Doroshī Weinraito"

Don't take this the wrong way but I'm skeptical of how you can be reading through this when you cant understand katakana. Granted I know people from Japan that have moved to the US or Canada and only know 100 Kanji now and stuff anymore but still speak it fluently. It just seems a little odd.

I started translating this a while ago, since then I have learned quite a bit. There is a WA sound, but it is rarely used for names. Watanuki is the only other Japanese name I have encountered that starts with WA. As to WE, there is no WE, not in the writing system or anywhere else. The WE sound we hear is actually Ue, but not UE. To people who speak English the Ue sounds just like WE. Also Waynewright is spelled Ueinato in Japanese. If you look at the SRWZ profile pictures for Big O characters you'll see both Timothy and Dorothy's' last name is spelled that way.
As to how I can translate Lost Memory, katakana is only used for names, nothing else uses katakana in Lost Memory. And I have a 10000+ Kanji dictionary to help me with the Kanji.

Um... in Katakana they created new sounds to help pronounce western words. and also there is a hiragana symbol for "we" and it was used often centuries ago but fell out of practice just like several other hiragana symbols. I'd have to find my notes but I belief simplifying and standardizing the Japanese language was an edict of one of the last emperors or shoguns way back when and that is when this occurred.

The new and revival of old sounds are called modern digraph additions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katakana
Look there and you will see all kinds of digraphs that go beyond the range of what is common in hiragana symbols.

R・ドロシー・ウェインライト, Āru Doroshī Weinraito

big "u" next to a small first column vowel makes it a "w" and a small "e" still makes it's "e" sound so when together: "we"

There's no "R" sound in Japanese either but they have to make a way to say it so it is pronounced Āru. Even if its not a thing of necessary they have to have some way to communicate sounds that are not in their language. They are not incapable of making sounds beyond their language's scope so ways to write them have also been made.

Katakana isn't easy stuff so it's an easy mistake to make.

Tell me something Dandy. Did you take Japanese? Never trust wikipedia when it comes to foreign languages. And some other subjects.
The "WE" and "WU" have been permanently dropped from the Japanese language. Also there is no YE or Yi letter. the "We" sound, as stated before, is made by Ue. Those are the first 2 letters in ウェインライト, not "WE". Seriously, go use google to find Japanese learning games and books. Genki and Yoburo are good books to use. The hiragana textile game is good to use.

Also use google translate if you are having trouble with the Japanese language. best damn cheat for translators just starting out. I used it to get the translation of Lost Memory as it is so far.
